The HyRail for Los Angeles

Save up to $6 Billion on Rail in L.A.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Access to affordable housing and the efficiency of transportation systems are interlinked. When transportation is slow & inefficient, people cannot live where they can afford.  With the passage of Measures M&R, Los Angeles has the opportunity to reinvent how people get around LA and link jobs to housing. Billions of dollars are at stake and the potential is enormous.

THE PROBLEM

  1. Increasing construction and operating costs for traditional rail transportation modes is making expansion of our current system quite costly. LA has the 2nd highest rail operating costs in the world and we are building less rail for more money.
  2. The Sepulveda Pass corridor connects the 1.7 million people of the San Fernando Valley to the populated and job rich West Side of L.A. via the Santa Monica Mountains, while being the only link the Valley has to LAX.  Current cost estimates range from $10-13 Billion for the first phase alone to Westwood, creating a $5-$8 Billion funding gap.  This is caused by Heavy Rail failing to travel at steep grades necessitating a 6 mile tunnel; thereby creating an overly costly proposition.  Traditional monorail; on the other hand, is too slow for the possibility of 70+ mph speeds through the free flowing, stationless sepulveda pass.
  3. The rapidly changing landscape of Los Angeles coupled with the current allocation of Measure M/R funds has us locked into projects that have been on the boards for over 20 years.  Total build out is 75 miles for $23 Billion. This still leaves out areas like the Inglewood Stadiums along Prairie ave, Silicon Beach on the west side, or even well deserving areas like Santa Monica bl through West Hollywood, with high capacity rail
  4. Tunneling adds years to construction thereby limiting the line to be complete only to westwood by the 2028 Olympics and postponing the later phase to LAX to an undetermined far out time frame

THE SOLUTION

HyRail is the combining of 3 well known/existing technologies which has the potential to

-Save Los Angeles Metro up to $6 Billion by choosing HyRail for 3 future rail lines

-Keep construction costs at or below $300 million per mile, increasing rail mileage

-Allow construction of lines not funded under current plans (ex: LAX-DTLA, Inglewood stadium connection)

-Has top speeds up to 125 mph; providing quicker access to jobs on the west side for the more affordable housing in the suburbs

-Decrease construction time and costs by .

-Increase capacity with Quadruple tracking around stations to allow for both local and express service

-Be the new legacy calling card for rail transportation in Los Angeles County
