Please help to teach your child the importance of maintaining good attendance and punctuality by getting them to school every day on time. Please make every effort to schedule doctor and dentist appointments after school hours.
Excessive, unexcused absences or late arrivals are detrimental to the educational process. In the event that unexcused absence or tardiness become chronic, 10 or more days, the school will adhere to the following attendance procedures. Students having 10 or more unexcused absences for the year may be denied promotion to the next grade.
* PLEASE NOTE: VACATIONS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR ARE HIGHLY DISCOURAGED AND ARE CONSIDERED AN UNEXCUSED ABSENCE
Excused Absences
Absences are recorded as EXCUSED ONLY if a doctor’s note is submitted to the main office/nurse. The note should include the date returning, child’s name, date absent, and the reason for the absence. Any absence for which the school does not receive a doctor’s note will be marked as unexcused absence.
Please do not send a sick child to school. Please ensure that students are fever free for at least 24 hours before returning to school. If a student becomes ill during school hours, the school nurse will release the child to a parent or emergency contact.
Tardiness
School begins every day at 8:20 a.m. Students are expected to arrive at school on time. If a student arrives after 8:30 a.m., they are considered late, and TARDY is recorded in their attendance. If a student is more than 40 minutes late (after 9:10 a.m.) they are marked ½ day unexcused absence.
3 tardies = 1 unexcused absence
Procedure for Chronic Absences
Students having more than 10 unexcused absences for the year may be denied promotion to the next grade. In the event that unexcused absence and tardiness become chronic, 10 or more unexcused absences the school will adhere to the following attendance procedures:
Attendance Requirement | Harrison Public Schools Attendance Procedure |
Any absence- Parent contacts the school by 8:45 a.m. to report the reason for the absence The absence call is for safety reasons and is required by law. This is the parent’s responsibility | If a child is absent and the parent does not contact the school, an automatic attendance call is sent to the parents. If the parent does not respond to the call, the school will make a reasonable effort to contact the parent to verify the absence. All attempts and parent communications are recorded |
5th unexcused absence or late arrival | A written notice will be sent to the parents informing them of the student’s attendance record, possible consequences, and request for parent response and improvement |

School Responsibilities
Parent Responsibilities
We, as parents, will support our children’s learning in the following ways:
Dear Parents and Students,
The Harrison Board of Education instituted a uniform policy for all students in grades Kindergarten through Grade 12. This policy has proven to be very successful.
Everyone at Hamilton Intermediate School is very proud of the students and their uniforms and the effect it has had on their all-around school spirit and level of cooperation. For the 2025-2026 school year, the school uniform colors will remain the same: burgundy shirt with a collar with the Hamilton School insignia and khaki pants, shorts, or skirts. Stretch fleece, corduroy, and sweat material are not allowed. Shorts and skirts must be 2 inches above the knee or longer.
Please not that in addition to the clothing requirements, the following rules apply:
During the winter months our school is more than adequately heated. If you wish for your child to wear an additional layer of clothing, please adhere to the following guidelines:
***APPROVED UNIFORM CLOTHING IS TO BE WORN ON DAILY BASIS***
It is the responsibility of the parents/guardian to make sure the proper uniform clothing is worn each day as required.
Thank you for your cooperation.
Respectfully,
John Carey
Principal
Nutrition and Celebration Information
While academic and athletic achievement are often indicators of a school district’s success, we believe our children’s health is equally as important especially when good nutrition advances academic achievement, athletic performance, and self esteem.
Our commitment is evidenced by Harrison’s Board of Education Policy # 3542:
“Food and beverages of minimal nutritional value (as defined by the U.S. Department of Agriculture) will be eliminated during the school day… All Food and beverage items listing sugar, in any form, as the first ingredient, and all forms of candy may not be served, sold or given away anywhere on school property at any time before the end of the school day.”
In an effort to adhere to these guidelines, the following will be strictly adhered to ensuring maximum use of classroom time for instruction.
Yearly Classroom Celebrations
Hamilton Intermediate School will have up to four “parties' ' during the course of the school year to celebrate: Halloween, Winter break, Valentine’s Day, and the End-of-Year. Notifications of these celebrations will be coordinated by the teacher and school nurse. NO FOOD WILL BE ALLOWED IN THE CLASSROOM FOR ANY OTHER EVENT WITHOUT PRIOR APPROVAL FROM THE PRINCIPAL AND SCHOOL NURSE.
