Subject: Dave Min Leads Scott Baugh Among Informed CA-47 Voters

Date: June 20, 2023

A new Public Policy Polling survey finds that Democratic State Senator Dave Min is in a strong position to defeat Republican Scott Baugh in the race for California’s 47th Congressional District. When voters are asked who they would prefer after hearing only the candidates’ names, party affiliation, and likely ballot designation, Baugh and Min are statistically within the margin of error. After voters hear the biographies of the two candidates, Min leads by 4 points (41-37), and after voters hear negative information about both candidates, Min ends up with a 7-point lead (43-36). Baugh is also underwater in favorability by 11 points (21-32), while Min has a +3 positive favorability rating (21-18).

A large majority (59%) of voters find Dave Min’s biography, including his current role as California State Senator and former law enforcement attorney for the SEC, a convincing reason to vote for him, with 38% finding it very convincing. Voters are less convinced by Baugh’s biography and profile, with only 30% of voters finding it to be a very convincing reason to vote for him.

Upon hearing negative messages about Baugh, including that he has faced more than 20 criminal charges for violating campaign finance laws and perjury, 65% of voters in CA-47 say that they find the information a convincing reason to vote against Baugh, with almost half (49%) saying they find it very convincing. Min’s DUI only makes 19% of voters very convinced to vote against him, and among overall voters a plurality (47%) say they do not find this a convincing reason to vote against him.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 555 California 47th Congressional District likely voters from June 14-15, 2023. The margin of error is +/- 4.2%. 61% of interviews for the survey were conducted by text message and 39% by telephone.
