Please note that the majority of our schools are hosting site based professional development on March 15, 2019. Therefore there are limited district offerings as teachers are expected to be at their school sites. 

Before registering, please check with your principal as there may be plans for professional development in your building or within your network. You may only attend district sponsored sessions if  you have prior approval from your principal.

Science Mission Possible Professional Development Series (Tier 1 PD)

Description:  The Mission Possible Professional Development Series uses The Understanding by Design® framework (UbD™ framework) to focus on teaching and assessing for understanding and learning transfer; and designs curriculum “backward” from those ends.

The aim of the series is to provide support to teachers through lesson planning, activities, resources and modeling of units aligned to Ohio’s Learning Standards for Science and the OST.

Mission Possible- Session 4

Facilitator: Kirsten Mahovlich, Science Curriculum Manager, grades 7-12 Cleveland Metropolitan School District and Jim Bader, Executive Director Leonard Gelfand STEM Center, College of Arts and Sciences and Case School of Engineering, Case Western Reserve University

Why:
·       Rigor and Relevance Through Inquiry: We will model inquiry learning, interdisciplinary lessons/activities which can be extended to create PBL’s.

·       Science Content: Teachers will participate in activities aligned and which model best teaching practices for the Science OSTs. Topics may include cells, genetics, evolution and diversity, forces and motion.

Outcomes and Expectations of Participants:

·       Participate in a PLC, actively sharing and modeling best practices.

·       Implementation of Mission Possible Units and Science resources.

·       Familiarize themselves with multiple on-line resources that support teaching and learning in Science.

·       Share student and teaching exemplars as Critical Friends.

Description: A follow-up session for the book by Kathleen Cushman, Fires in the Middle School Bathroom, given away at Blue in the Middle Professional Development Day on February 15, 2019. We’ll take a closer look at the insights presented in the book and discuss how to forge stronger relationships between young adolescents and adults.
