Goal: Visualise all of the senses and talk about how this enriches meaning

Task One - Read the text, find as many examples as you can of sentences or phrases that helped you visualise these three senses.

Sight

 and looked at the door

Touch

Nick

scratched his chin

 - Nick implies that he is thinking without him saying it.

Hearing

agreement.” Noah tried to

sound strong, but Zadie could hear the cracks.

- Noah wants to be strong but Zadie knew he could hear the crack.

Task Two - Choose two of your examples and discuss how they enriched the meaning of the text for you.

Task Three - The author wants to add to the story to help their readers understand how bad the food tasted in the bunker and how bad the bunker smelled. Write two sentences that could be added to the text to help the reader visualise the taste of the food. Once done write another two sentences to help the reader visualise some of the smells the children may have faced in the bunker.

The bunker that we were staying in had a stench worse than Nicks grandma’s underwear mixed with rotten tomatoes and dead rats. Then don’t get me started about the food, it was so dry it felt like sandpaper against my tongue and the taste of spoiled, moldy yogurt was something you could never imagine.
