What is Call for Code?

Call for Code is a global program that invites developers and problem solvers around the world to build and contribute to sustainable open source technology projects that address social and humanitarian issues, while ensuring the top solutions are deployed to make a demonstrable difference.

Call for Code has grown into an always-on, tech-for-good platform with many ways to get involved, including participation in the annual Global Challenge, collaboration on open source projects including Call for Code for Racial Justice, or being inspired to further develop your technical skills.

How did we determine the 2022 Call for Code Challenge theme?

Sustainability is a top priority for communities and companies around the world. But innovative solutions are needed to meet the sustainable development goals set forth by the United Nations. At its core, sustainability is a social and environmental justice issue. Sustainability practices and solutions need to benefit all communities, but especially those communities that have been marginalized and polluted in the past. Technology is key, as it can provide effective, scalable solutions to address sustainability challenges.

What are the eligibility criteria and official rules?

The Participation Agreement you accept upon registration for the Global Challenge event platform Global Challenge event platform
contains complete details of the official rules and eligibility criteria.

What is a Challenge Accelerator Event, and how can I participate?

A Challenge Accelerator is generally a 2-week competition that is designed to help fast-track your project towards submission to the Global Challenge, although Global Challenge submission is not required. Participants will build a project to address a specific and targeted use case under the theme of Sustainability. The event may include technical workshops, mentoring, and additional learning content. Participants may be eligible for additional prizes.

I'm a University student. What additional resources are available to me?

IBM Academic Initiative program resources are available to 2022 Call for Code Global Challenge participant teams that are comprised completely of students that have been enrolled in an accredited institution of higher education at any time during the 2022 Call for Code Global Challenge (April 26, 2022 – October 31, 2022).

Continued use or access to these resources beyond the original academic use or challenge submission for productive or entrepreneurial purposes requires a commercial license.

What if I don't have a team?

Not a problem. We will be hosting a team building session in addition to providing ongoing resources and tools in the Global Challenge resource site, hosted on the BMA platform, to continue to help participants form and build teams.

What is my time commitment for this event?

Otherwise instructions will be provided after registration on how to set up the appropriate account for use in the Global Challenge. For more information please see the Insights and Resources page.
