Dear Quincy Elementary Kindergarten Families,

It is with great pleasure that we welcome you, as part of our educational family, to a wonderful 2022-2023 school year! A new school year is always exciting for families, students, and educators.

We are thrilled at the opportunity to get to know all of you and engage in the educational process together. Your child is embarking on a journey that will lead them on many roads of discovery and learning. Our focus is always providing each child with new challenges that will result in a rewarding school experience.

We are committed to making the Josiah Quincy Elementary School (JQES) a safe, welcoming, nurturing, supportive place that provides a challenging educational experience for all of our families and students. Together, we will work with you, our families, and community partners in preparing our students to be contributing global citizens beginning with our F.I.R.E. values:

Focus                *Stay on task

* Listen and follow directions

Integrity          *Be honest, courageous, and trustworthy

*Do the right thing regardless of what others are doing

Respect         *Treat people the way you want to be treated

*Value property of others like your own

Empathy         *Think of other people’s feelings

* Be mindful and considerate of others

Our school hours are 9:30am to 4:10pm. In preparation for a positive and productive school day and year, it is important that your child arrives at school on time.

Kindergarten Orientation

We are excited to welcome you to Josiah Quincy Elementary School.  We at the Quincy School understand that transitioning into school can be difficult for young children, which is why we are inviting you and your K1/K2 child to come to school on Friday, September 9th, from 10:00AM – 11:00AM for a Kindergarten orientation. We will meet on our playground (please use the stairs located on Washington and Oak Street as the entry point to the playground), with each teacher assigned to a different area of the outdoor space and plenty of signage and staff members to assist families with finding their assigned teachers.

Please note that school will not start for your K1/K2 child until Monday, September 12th.

First Day of Kindergarten

The first day of school for all Kindergarten students is Monday, September 12th.  Breakfast and lunch are FREE for all of our students each day. We recommend bringing your child to school on the first day, but if you plan on sending them on the bus, please put a label on their backpack with their name and their teacher’s name so we can make sure everyone gets to the right place.  All students should come in with a list of any allergies, your phone number, and how your Kindergartener will be getting home that day- be it the bus, after school program (please include the name of the program), or family pick-up (with a list of names of adults you give permission to pick your child).

Arrival Procedures: School begins at 9:15.

Walkers: Starting at 9:15, staff will be stationed at the bottom of all playground stairs to escort/monitor students as they proceed to their identified areas on the playground.  Grades K0-K2 should meet at the stairwell on Washington and Oak St.; Grades 1-5 should meet at the stairwell on Oak and Shawmut St.  Parents/Guardians will be allowed on the playground for the first two days of school only.  Grades 3 and 5 will line up on the lower playground, Grades K0, K1, K2, 1, 2, and 4 will line-up on the upper playground.

Bus Students:  The only students that will be dropped off on Washington Street will be students in the Multiple Disabilities classrooms or individual students who have paraprofessionals to greet them at the bus.  All others will be dropped off on Marginal Road and staff will accept each bus one at a time and escort them to the playground keeping between students.

Classes will enter the building one at a time using three different entry points.

The playground will be our arrival area regardless of weather, so please plan accordingly each day!

Student Arrival after 9:30: Parents/Guardians will escort students to the side door on Washington Street, across from the middle school.  There is an intercom there, parents/guardians will page the office using the intercom and a staff member will come to escort the student to the classroom.

Dismissal Procedures

K0-K2 will begin dismissing students at 3:45,  Grades 1 and 2 will begin dismissing at  3:55, Grade 3 at 4:00, and Grades 4 and 5 at 4:05

Walkers:  Oak and Shawmut St.:  Parents/Guardians of students in K2-5th grade  will be asked to stand in designated grade level areas on the lower playground.  Classes will be called to the landing at the stairs and sent from there to their parents/guardians.   K1 Parents/Guardians will gather outside of the glass doors on the corner of Washington St. and Oak St. and the students will be dismissed to families via the glass doors. Families should leave the school grounds immediately after receiving their children if possible in order to alleviate  the crowding  on the lower playground.

Bus students: Bus students will be dismissed from the auditorium until the cafeteria  is ready for use in November (it is being converted to a BPS My Way Cafe!).  Staff members (para-professionals and others) will be assigned to each pod to escort students to the auditorium, and the staff members will stay to assist Mr. Ng  until the teachers assigned to bus duty arrive.

If a student is being dismissed before 3:35 on a school day, the parent/guardian will use the Intercom at the Washington Street door across from the old  JQUS Middle School campus. Students cannot be dismissed after 3:35, as we will be beginning our regular school dismissal and staff members may not be available to escort students. Parents/Guardians should notify classroom teachers, preferably in writing, if they need to pick up their student early on a particular day.

The playground will be our dismissal area for walkers regardless of weather, so please plan accordingly each day!

Save the Date- Open House - Thursday, September 15th from 4:45-6:45pm where you will be able to meet your child(ren)’s teachers, learn about the curriculum and specific grade level expectations, as well as ways to support their learning at home.
