Y6 Secondary School Applications

If your child is currently in Y6, please note that your application for a secondary school place needs to be made by 31st October. You can submit up to four choices in order of preference, and the county council strongly advise that you use all of your preferences. Secondary schools will be running open days and evenings throughout this term.

Aureus Open Evening: Thursday 10th October, 5-8pm – please register to attend via their school website

DGS Open Evening: Wednesday 2nd October, 4:30-7:30pm

SBS Open Evening: Wednesday 25th September, 5-8pm

The Downs School Open Evening: Thursday, 3 October 2019 6:30pm-8:45pm

The Downs School Open Morning:Wednesday, 9 October 2019 10:00am-12:00pm (please arrive between 10:00 and 10:30 for a tour).

King Alfreds School Open Evening: Thursday 26 September 4.30pm – 8.30pm on West Site for Talks and Tours.

Attendance

Having been to an Oxfordshire Attendance briefing last week, I just need to update you and clarify the situation:  unfortunately, I cannot authorise family holidays unless there are exceptional circumstances. However, a form still needs to be completed and sent to the office so we are aware that your child/children will be absent.  

The information below comes from county guidelines which we will be following:

Why attendance matters:

Less than 5 days absence = approx 98+% attendance

14 days absence = approx 93% attendance

20 days absence = approx 90% attendance

30 days absence = approx 88% attendance

If a child’s absence falls below 95% a letter will need to be sent home to make parents aware. If a child’s absence falls below 90%, a contract will need to be drawn up with the school in an effort to improve attendance.  90% attendance equates to missing half a day of school each week.

We hope you understand the importance of this and support us in our aim to increase attendance this academic year.

Harvest festival

On Friday 27th September at 10am, years 1-6 will be going to church to attend our annual Harvest Festival.  Parents are very welcome to join us, all classes will be contributing to the service.  We will be collecting contributions for Didcot Food Bank throughout this week; if you can help by donating any items, the Food Bank will be very grateful as Christmas is such a busy period. Currently, they are particularly looking for donations of tinned meat / pies, long-life baguettes (the type that need heating), pasta sauces, packet puddings, UHT milk, packet potato, long life juice, biscuits, treats, cereal, sugar and tinned veg; however, all donations of tinned or packet food (no fresh please) will be gratefully received. If you can spare any items, please send them to school with your child this week to pass on to their class teacher.

Homework

We are currently reviewing homework and looking into a variety of options.  So far, years 1-6 are sending home weekly spellings and all children are expected to read at least three times a week to be recorded in reading records/ diaries.  Times tables rock stars, RM easimaths and phonics bug are all available online.  Some classes have also been sending home worksheets.  This will be finalised over the next couple of weeks.  Many thanks for your patience with this.

School Census Day - Thursday 3rd October

This is the day when the next year’s budget is set for the school and it depends on numbers in classes and children staying for school lunches on the day.  

Please help the school by encouraging your child have a school lunch that day. To be blunt the more children who stay for school dinner that day means the more money we get next year.

Urgent Vacancies

Lunchtime supervisor: We are in need of a lunchtime supervisor to join our team every day each week from 12 - 1pm term-time only. If you can help, or know someone who can, please contact the school office.

Breakfast Club Assistant: Would you like to join our Breakfast club team? Working from 7:30-8:35am on a Tuesday and Wednesday morning term-time only.

If you are interested in any or all of the above, please contact the school office ASAP.

Macmillan Cake Sale

Miss Mundy and the school council are holding a cake sale in the school hall on Friday afternoon from 2.30pm onwards to support Macmillan Cancer Support. Please come along and help them raise money for this worthy cause.

PTA - Circus Afternoon

Roll up, Roll up….

The PTA have  organised a circus themed ‘welcome event’ for Saturday 28th September between 2-4pm.  This will be a great chance to meet other parents and families in your children’s classes.  We hope to see lots of you there.  If you are able to offer any help running the event, please let the PTA or school office know.  

Swimming contributions

A polite reminder that we are asking for a £10 per child contribution towards this terms lessons, if you have not paid already could I ask for them to be sent to the office in an envelope with your child/rens names on.

Remember to bring in your ALDI stickers - we’re doing quite well so far.

Medical Updates

If there have been any changes or updates to your child’s medical needs, including medications and allergies, please ensure that you inform the school and fill out the relevant forms.  If your child has an inhaler or epipen in school please check the medication is in date!

Please can we also ask parents to let us know if your child was injured or particularly unwell over the weekend.  If we are aware of any injuries we can be best prepared to follow up as needed.

Please also remember we are a nut and sesame seed free school, can we ask that you do not send your children in with any nut product - this includes Nutella and Peanut butter.

RM Unify

Remember all children have a log in to RM Unify (which can be found in their reading record or homework diary).  Please use these websites to support your child’s learning at home.  RM Unify can be accessed via the Pupil Area on the school website or via the following link https://hagbourneschool.rmunify.com/.  Children in Key Stage 2 now also have access to Times Tables Rockstars to support them with learning their times tables.

Car Park

Please could we ask that only Blue Badge holders park in the disabled spaces in the village hall.  Please also take care not to block these spaces in.  We do have families in our own school who need to use these spaces and they may also be needed by Blue Badge holders from the wider community.  If this continues to be an issue, we will ask the local PCSOs to monitor the situation.
