Sept. 10 , 2018

Dear Parents,

The school year has started with great success.  Despite the heat last week, students were focused and engaged.  We started the year with a school-wide focus on recycling and composting.  Our staff lead by Ms. Valentine, worked hard to educate students and we are off to a great start.  We ate 2,000 meals and only produced one bag of landfill waste.   What a success!

This year I will send a parent newsletter every Monday afternoon with highlights and updates.  Additionally, I have started a twitter feed to share what is happening at King.  It is on our website and you can follow us at @CaitlinLeClair4

As I mentioned at the Open House, we value your involvement in King’s community of learners. In our EL Education model, students participate in at least two expeditions each year using the community to address important issues, representing their knowledge with high quality products, and presenting to an authentic audience.  We host many local experts and work closely with many organizations in this work.

Our expeditions this fall cover a wide range of compelling topics. We will be looking for experts in immigration, civil rights, international cultures, and freedom of speech and religion and freedom from fear and hunger.  We’ll also be looking for experts in bats, insects and native habitats, as well as green building design.

With our new master schedule, there is more opportunity for classroom volunteers on a ongoing basis, as well as one-time opportunities to work with students during editing days, science summits, or as fieldwork chaperones. You will hear more from individual teams as needs arise, but please use the survey below to indicate your general interest.

We are looking to host a Day of Service at King that would include painting and sprucing up the hallways and common spaces.  If you are available on Saturday, October 27 from 9am to 12pm, please fill out the survey (link below).

Please complete this family participation survey to share ways you can be involved at King and sign up for the Day of Service.

We extend a special yearlong invitation to join us at school activities and events whenever possible. Your attendance at culminating events is one of the most important ways in which you can support your child’s learning.  Please join us for as many as possible - you will learn a lot about King and our wonderful students!

Please reach out to our Community Coordinator, Nancy Berrang, at any time with ideas or questions about getting involved at King -, or 874-8140.

Thank you and welcome to another year at King!

Caitlin LeClair
