Important Dates:

September 15, 2019 Flute Group Class 3:30-5:30pm @ Kristine’s House, 7015 23rd Ave NW.

December 8, 2019 Flute Group Class 4-6pm @ Music Center of the Northwest, 901 N 96th St.

January 19, 2020 4:30pm Studio Recital @ Music Center of the Northwest, 901 N 96th St.

June 13, 2020 2:00pm Studio Recital @ Queen Anne Christian Church, 1316 3rd Ave W.

Other piano run-through classes may be added as the year goes on, especially before recitals. If you cannot make a group run through class, or if you have a complex piece, you may need to schedule piano rehearsals on your own before events and performances.

All students under 18 are required to participate in recitals. Adult students are highly encouraged to do so. Performing and sharing your musicianship with others is part of learning music. Short receptions follow the recitals; feel free to bring cookies or treats. Please ask me if you have any questions.

Attendance

It is important to be consistent with your lesson times. Please do not schedule routine doctor visits or orthodontist visits during your lesson and do your best to arrive on time.

Tardies

If you are more than 15 minutes late to your lesson time, I will consider that a no-show and charge you for the lesson. I  cannot guarantee being able to teach you your lesson if you are more than 15 minutes late. As a general rule, I will attempt to contact you when you are 10 minutes late. If you know you will be late, please call me at (206)250-2101 or email me and let me know so I wait for you and don’t count you as a no-show.

Known Schedule Conflicts:

Please let me know of any schedule issues at least 48 hours before your lesson. If you notify me of a schedule conflict (family vacation, concert, etc) within 48 hours of your lesson I will still charge for that lesson. (As an example, if your lesson is Tuesday at 4:30, please call, email, or text me by 4:30 on Sunday to avoid being charged for the lesson.)

Sick Days:

If you/your child is sick, please notify me as early as you can, although I understand that this is not always easy. I will excuse lessons where the student is sick if I am notified by noon the day of the lesson.

Teacher Cancellation:

If I have to cancel a lesson, I will attempt to reschedule, and if we cannot I will credit your account. This is usually because of a concert or rehearsal; I will provide as much notice as I can if a concert/rehearsal conflicts with your lesson time. You will never be charged for lessons I cancel.

Payment

Payment for each month of lessons will be due at the beginning of each month. I will provide an invoice about one week before your first lesson of the month. Forms of payment accepted are cash or check.

Music Teacher’s Helper

I use Music Teacher’s Helper to invoice and to organize lesson times. Please let me know if you would like a log-in to view your lesson time on my general calendar. Because I write written notes during lesson, I do not use the notes feature of this program, only the calendar and invoicing features.

Expectations

My expectation for all of my students is that you will have fun learning the flute! Each and every student is different, but as for some general expectations:

  1. Arrive prepared to your lesson. This means all your music, flute, notebook, and brain ready to go!

  1. Daily practice length should be about ¾ of your lesson time. If you have an hour lesson, you should be practicing for about 45 minutes on the other six days of the week, unless we have come to another agreement.

  1. Students/parents are responsible for acquiring needed materials including a working instrument, music stand, metronome, and recommended books. I understand that these things can be expensive and if money is an issue please let me know and I will work with you on solutions. I am very generous with photocopies, but if a student is going to be playing through most of a music book, it is a good idea to buy that book. I’ll let you know at lessons which books you will need.

  1. Keep your flute in working order. All flutes need at least a yearly checkup; marching flutes, beginner flutes made with lower caliber materials, and flutes that get dropped on the floor may need more regular repairs. Local options for Clean, Oil, Adjust appointments are:
  1. John Werth (in Redmond) at unionhillwinds@gmail.com
  2. Erik Nugent (in Lynnwood) at fluteworks@gmail.com or (781)526-3677

I have read and understand the above policies, rules, and expectations
