How to Install Ubuntu on a MacBook Pro
5.0 Installing the Ubuntu Desktop
let's go ahead and get started all right so the first singer in need here of course is virtualbox so in case you don't know a virtualbox is a virtual machine program at 100% free so unlike you know VMware or Parallels those are paid version so virtualbox is actually a a free virtual machine software so it's and get it all you have to do is go to virtualbox. Org and there should be a big download button here with the latest version of virtualbox so I have to do is Click right here on this download button and it's going to take you to another page here it says download virtualbox and you can see we have our packages rain here
we have Windows host OS 10 hose Lenox we're on OS 10 we're going to click that and it's going to begin downloading virtualbox no I'm not going to download this because I already have virtualbox installed as you can see right down here but once it downloads it's just like any Mac and I can you open up the installer and you go through the installation process know one thing I will say about the insulation process of virtualbox is there may be one issue that you encounter so when you actually start the installation of virtualbox you make it an error that pops up and you may have another pop up that says you need to allow this in system preferences so basically what you do is if you get that you go your system preferences and you go to the security and privacy section they want to make sure you're on the general Tab
once you're here if you get that pop up and it'll be right here in this area and you should see a button over here at it says allow it'll say something like Oracle America is trying do something you do blah blah blah and you want to click that allow button it's just a security thing in Mac OS you know they're all about insecurity and makes it kind of difficult do things sometimes but all you have to do is click that allow button restart the virtualbox installation and then you will be able to install it okay so you can see over here is where your different virtual machines will be you can have as many as you would like.
we're going to use the desktop Persian right here and you can see the current version is 20. O4 so you just want to click into desktop and then up here top UC download it right here you can scroll down and you can click on this download button and then I'll take you to his page it says thank you for downloading and it should start automatically here every take a look you can see it is 2.72 GB. I have already downloaded this as well so we don't need to download that either I just want to show you this right here as well so you can see the recommended system requirements. when we get done creating this
you want to make this an identifiable name most of the time I just named mine or whatever operating system I'm installing so this is a boon to 20. O4 so that's a good recognizable name for it to appear over here and you don't want to change your machine folder this is where your actual virtual machine files are going to be put on your Mac and usually it's in your home folder so if you live in your home folder you'll have a virtualbox VM folder so don't change that it's a good place for it there.
Automatically recognizes what operating system you're running so that's another reason why you want to make an identifiable name because you can see it now knows that were using Linux and Ubuntu 64-bit so can you so once you get all this stuff good to go here you just go in continue okay. the amount of ram that you want to allocate to your machine. my computer has 16 GB of RAM in it so I can choose you know pretty much whatever I want in this green area and you know I can go a good amount now although I don't recommend going that amount it is nice to know that well you could go that amount of course notices in megabytes when you can see 16384 Mb and then 16 gigs of RAM you see how close that kind of is so 2048 is about 2 gigs of
RAM and it's going to be good enough for this demo
it's going to be good enough for most people so I'm going to go ahead and set that so you can continue
and now we have the hard drive so this is the new virtual hard disk is going to be in this middle right here so this is what you've definitely want to use is create a virtual hard disk now so you want to hang create anyone make sure that it's on virtualbox disk image and he continued
I would do dynamically allocated but you can also do a perfect size so it kind of explains it a little bit here for you but basically what this means is if you choose dynamically allocated it will allocate the space that needs overtime until it gets to the Limit that you sent and if you choose fix size well what it's going to do is it going to take all that gigabytes that you said immediately so it'll take on Space off your house machine so that's why dynamically allocated is the better choice here but sometimes a fixed size may work better for you and run virtual machines off of external like ssds are hard drives so maybe if you have one of those effects eyes might be the better option for you but I always do dynamically allocated so you can continue
and now we have me hard drive space that we want to allocate to the machine so it recommended 10 gigabytes but remember on the website for a bill to it said it recommends 25 what I always like to do is about 64 it doesn't you know you're not going to need that much but you definitely want to do it at least 25 because that's when they're going to recommend I'm going to do 64 for the purposes video but it is very important to note that your hard drive space cannot be changed unlike the ram the ram can be changed at any point you want but your hard drive space cannot so it's very important that you allocate plenty of space here because if you want to change this the only way to do it is to delete your entire virtual machine and start again I'm going to do 64 for this demo and I'm not even going to keep machine so that's what I'm going to do but my computer is 512gb SSD so don't just find out what your computer has see what you think would work best for you you know
what programs are going to be installing on ubuntu to where you going to be doing with it how much space do you think you need because this number cannot be changed. so once you figure that out you hate create and you can see we now have our virtual machine now here's
we actually started out
we actually started out for the first time we want to click on the settings button up here because they want to check on a few things so in this General tab there's really nothing that you can change to mind it looks good to me know in the system so here's where you can change that Ram so like I said if you find them is not working good for you it's slow you come back in here your Bump that ran up some more and you can just play around
you want to put that all the way the right for your video memory and if you want to get a little bit next performance out of it you can enable 3D acceleration and that's going to make the graphics and things a little bit smoother for you but on the video memory make sure it's all the way to right regardless of one virtual machine you were doing you and make sure it's all the way to write on a boon to its limits like 128gb
so we can hit okay on that and we are ready to put that start button for the first time all right so whenever you're ready we can go ahead and click that start button and it's going to start up to Virtual nurse for the first time and when you started up here for the first time it's going to ask you to insert the basically installation file
so we need to install is going to pop up this menu in at this menu is brand-new here in version 6 but don't let it scare you and all you want to do is click on this ad button here so is a disk image when you click on that it's going to bring up your finder window right here and you just want to locate wherever you put that ISO file so it might still be in there downloads but for me I've moved at a different location but you want to locate that you want to click on it and you won't hit open it was going to put it right here in this menu so you want to make sure it's selected and then you hit shoes and there we go so now what this means is when we click starring it's been a boot up the ubuntu an insulation so go ahead and click that start button and you're going to see the virtual box logo for the boot screen and then you're going to start loading into the ubuntu insulation so we'll go and get this a second and I'll forward to load up here all right so now he's
going to check the disk here and if you see some random stuff pop up on the screen and are you seeing the you're floating line or anything like that it's totally normal boots up so he's here and then we should be into the insulation all right so here we are on the welcome screen click the X on these two little pop up sausages virtualbox stuff you can just click that get it out of the way but here we are on the installation welcome screen so make sure your language is correct.
go ahead and choose your keyboard layout make sure that's correct then you can hit continue.
we want to go ahead and make sure that it says normal installation because we want the full install of Ubuntu and you want to make sure the download updates while installing is checked just so as it says you can save some time and then right here you don't need to check this because the virtualbox guest additions should take care of that so we'll make sure you got all that good to go and then hit the continue button
again and Siri will make sure the erase disk and install ubuntu is selected and then we can hit the install now button right here and then this is going to confirm that you want to write to change the disc and we do so we can continue wants to confirm basically your time zone and everything like that it continued again or are you so now I'm basically want you to create an account then you can hit continue again here and now we are finally beginning the installation process
so now it's finally installing a boon to hear and whatever this gets done I will come back alright so now that it is done installing and wants us to go ahead and restart so just simply click on the restart Now button you're going to get this message that says please remove the installation medium well in virtualbox you do not have to do that
you can connect your online accounts but for now I'm just going to hit skip up here and then you can also set up in the live patch but I'm also going to skip that for now and you can send system information you know to help him prove a boon to so you might as well do that then again you choose whenever you want any settings.
now you can hit the done button appear and here we are on the desktop for Ubuntu 20 we can actually start using this.
whatever the terminal gets done doing what it needs to do we're going to have to restart in order for the changes to take place so going to wait for this to get done and then we'll go ahead and restart it if so you can see it is done here all we need to do is restarts.
there you go guys you're now ready to go with Ubuntu version 20
