Artist Statement

In Bohemian Rhapsody, Freddie Mercury shared his story through the use of conversations with his mom, conversations with himself, and religious terms. In my imitation piece I created a spoken word poem using Mercury’s style but instead of about family and sexulity, my poem is about a person who has two sides to herself. The evil and the good, and how the evil takes over her. In my song I included the word “Mama” and religious terms that Freddie Mercury used such as “Bishmilla” and “Beelzebub.” While writing The Good and The Evil it felt necessary to include these factors because otherwise it wouldn't be Freddie Mercury’s style. Bohemian Rhapsody  goes through various musical styles in episodic segments which is exactly what I tried to do in my spoken word poem. There are several random scenarios that in a way link with one another.

The Good and The Evil

Why is it so complicated? Why can’t there just be one?

Caught in a water well, no escape from the other me

Don’t be afraid, look down at the darkness and see

I’m just a poor girl, trying to get away

There’s no way of escaping

Mama, there are two of me

The one who does as told

And the one who does as wanted

I’ve tried to keep them civil

But one is stronger

She has turned her back on me

Has shunned me away

Mama, we were just starting to get along

But now she’s gone

Mama, oooh I didn’t mean to hurt you

(oooooh) It’s too late now

There is no going back, your time has come

It’s time for you to say goodbye

You’ve got to go

You’ve got to leave me behind and find your own path

Goodbye now

I see a little shadow of me

Sabrina Sabrina, will you do the tango

I see a ray of lightning, and hear the water echoing through the walls

I see her at the end of the well

I can no longer recognize her

She’s not me

She’s full of darkness

(Help) Help, (Help) Help, (Help) Help

I’m just a poor girl, trying to get away

(She’s just a poor girl, trying to get away)

Will you let me in?

Bishmilla! There’s no coming back

(Let her in) I will not let you in

(Let her in) I will not let you in

(Let me in) Will not let you in

(Let me in) Will not let you in

(Let me in) no no no

Mama mia, there are two of me

Beelzebub has a devil put inside of me

So you think you can part me away?

So you think you can leave me to get lost?

Ohhhh, don't do this to me

We were once side by side

Don’t do this to me
