Joslin PTA Meeting

March 21, 2018

The meeting was called to order by Catherine Bacon at 5:10 pm. SEconded by Natasha Chapman.

In presence were: Jennifer McGaffeny, Julie Barschow, Patrick Aziz, Debra Ambrose, Natasha Chapman, Catherine Bacon, Amber Caskey, Summer McKinnon.

  1. Principal’s Report - 2 minutes
  1. Mr. Aziz discussed the Joslin budget and reduction in staff (loss of parent support specialist). If there are families who didn’t apply for free and reduced lunch but might qualify, we need to try to get those applications in in an effort to increase our F&RL percentage (which might, in turn, give us enough to qualify for a PSS). Patrick also informed PTA that the Creative Learning Initiative staff is now housed at Joslin.

  1. Treasurer’s Report - 2 minutes
  1. McKinnon presented the current credits and debits and updated the board on our balances (see below).
  1. President’s Report - 10 minutes
  1. Budget update - reduction in staff (one 5th grade teacher, no parent support specialist, lack of funding to purchase other ½ of assistant principal).  What can PTA do to help fund the positions?  Julie is suggesting an online crowdfunding campaign.  She would also like board approval to use some of the money in our current ledger to purchase part of the position. The board voted unanimously to start the crowdfunding campaign. Mini grants approved.
  2. CAC update - CAC is in agreement to do whatever we can as a campus to find the money to fund the AP position.
  1. Parliamentarian’s Report - 10 minutes
  1. Board Election - Julie has heard that a few parents would like to be on the board. Stephanie will not be running. Julie would like the major offices filled with parents. According to research, PTA with parents tends to do better (paraphrased). Natasha feels teachers should be more representative. Julie would like to check with Summer about why certain positions were filled and if it had something to do with numbers. Catherine is going to check the bylaws. She has said certain things are done by ‘membership’ and some things are done by ‘board’. She also says to get motivated parents by having  more board member meetings. To be official about votes, the must be voted on during full membership. Social media presence may be  beneficial for board specific meetings. Natasha remembers voting for something as a non-board member. Catherine has described certain board bylaws involving member-specific votes. Key roles may need more attention and dedication. Levels of commitment could be an option. Some people can give the time and dedication they can. Mr. Aziz has suggested grade level representatives. Catherine is reiterating the commitment levels. Julie has asked her to layout a format for different roles to use as a starting point. Catherine has suggested a ‘How can you help?’ packet. Communication efforts should be bolstered. Pre-event talent show to mention PTA stuff? Summer has suggested to Julie to have assembly updates for PTA.
  1. Raffle - 30 minutes
  1. Jenn B is working hard on the raffle. She has been busy but, she’s getting back on it. We will get an update via email. She would like to reschedule the meeting possibly MTW of next week after 4. Board members are discussing when they can meet.  Jenn will follow up with Catherine about bylaws regarding ‘gambling’ v ‘raffle’. Summer is worried about getting raffle specifics printed on the tickets in time.

The meeting was adjourned at 6:10 pm.
