Market & Brand Competitor Report

Stoned Immaculate

Stoned Immaculate is a small vintage-inspired clothing brand founded in 2015 in Los Angeles, California. All their clothing is designed and produced locally in small batches and ethically manufactured using premium recycled fabrications. Their model is direct-to-consumer, and their products are sold exclusively through their Shopify website. In 2017, their net sales were worth more than $449,000 (National Investor Network), and their clothes are often worn by Hollywood actresses.

In the words of Creative Director and Co-Founder Elliot Hans:

"A 70's love child born in Topanga Canyon, Stoned Immaculate echoes California's golden era and our deep appreciation for all things vintage, Stoned Immaculate is crafted in small batches sustainably and ethically made close to our hearts with passionate attention to quality, detail & attaining the perfect fit. We’re inspired by a culture of freedom, beauty, and sovereign expression while playing in the unified field of consciousness and love. We reflect the golden era of Now and the gentle warriors of our Future. You can wear Stoned Immaculate knowing that you are carrying with you all of the memories and energy of a time when hair was long, love was free, and the music was capable of taking you to a place you've never been before. Drawing inspiration from photographs, books, music and a few of our own highly coveted vintage scores from the 60’s & 70’s, we seek to create something worth passing on for generations to come." (“Our Flow.”)

Stoned Immaculate is a contemporary brand on the higher end of the price range. Their cheapest items, which are their graphic t-shirts and basic knit bodysuits, retail for $98. One of their more expensive jean styles retails for $339, and their limited edition “David Bowie Major Tom Sweater” made of Merino wool and acrylic sold for $398. They also have several collaborative collections at higher price points.

Their sizing ranges from XXS (0) to XL (10), and 23-32 for pants.

Réalisation Par

Réalisation Par, launched by Australian duo Teale Talbot and Alexandra Spencer in 2015, is a direct-to-consumer business that specializes in dresses, skirts, and tops for young women. The brand’s aesthetic could be described as French elegance meets Los Angeles casualness. This excerpt from their website’s “About Us” section explains what makes their products unique:

“All of our dresses are made from 100% silk and sewn in factories that specialize in this fabric. The next addition was to have prints that were unique and signature to us, designed by our team of creatives that you wouldn’t see elsewhere. You will recognize our prints as hidden within each repeat is a ‘FOR RÉAL’ letting you know, you have a Réalisation Par piece.” (Klerk)

The brand forgoes complete collections and disregards the fashion cycle, prioritizing season-less staple pieces. Réalisation Par started with six dress designs that could be sold for years to come.

“It just didn’t make any sense to us to make a 70-piece collection three or four times a year that would have a three-month life cycle. For us, it was about changing the psychology of shoppers – a good dress should always be a good dress, at any time.”  (Klerk)

Despite not conforming to seasonal trends, Réalisation has still succeeded in making their clothes desirable. The brand relies heavily on social media for marketing and gained somewhat of a cult following after being worn by Instagram It-girls (Kaia Gerber, Devon Lee Carlson, Bella Hadid, etc). They’ve also collaborated with icons like Elton John and Claudia Schiffer for limited collections.

Beyond their retail strategy, Réalisation Par’s success lends itself to the fact that they know their customer. The brand markets to 18-35-year-old women, and is not about exclusivity but rather accessibility to quality clothing.

"'We like to call what we’re doing ‘desirable but obtainable’ – we were very conscious early on that nothing could be over $250 and most things were under $200,' Talbot says."

This strategic price point makes their product affordable in terms of contemporary fashion and shows that they keep their customer’s income/lifestyle in mind. Their sizing ranges from XXS to XXL.

Réalisation Par made $US18.3 million in gross sales and $US7.3 million adjusted EBITDA in the 2019 financial year. (Thompson, Macdonald)

Paco Rabanne

Established in 1966 by the eponymous Spanish designer, Paco Rabanne was known for his unconventional dressmaking methods and use of materials like aluminum and plastic. He often employed metal for chainmail-like designs, which were the focus of his debut Collection "Manifesto: 12 unwearable dresses in contemporary materials."

The brand today makes updated versions of several of these 60s avant-garde designs, and the use of metallics is still very prominent on Paco Rabanne runways. However, they also keep up with contemporary trends and utilize other fabrics (including knits) for their womenswear and menswear, making more wearable pieces for day-to-day use.

As a ready-to-wear brand, Paco Rabanne's price point ranges from USD$60 to $6,000, selling a variety of items like t-shirts and hoodies, to intricate dresses and bags. Their items are available in sizes XXS to XXXL, and standard European sizing (34-46), and are sold through their website, department stores (online & physical), and several of their own locations around the world.
