Day Before Pride Festival - Friday

Pre-Pride Set-Up

Description: Volunteers help to prepare the Festival grounds prior to the event. This includes marking the designated vendor and exhibitor sites and setting up tents and tables.

Requirements: This position requires some physical activity and may require lifting, bending, and standing for long periods.

Timing: Volunteers must be available the day before the Pride Festival starting at 10:00 AM. The expected completion time is 12:00 PM; however, this is subject to change.

Day of Pride – Saturday

Pride Set-Up and Check In

12+ volunteers

Description: Volunteers assist with the direction of vendors and exhibitors to their designated festival locations. This may include table setup, traffic management, and/or passing out vendor information packets/ envelopes.

Requirements: This position requires some physical activity, which may include walking and navigating stairs or ramps. Accommodations for those with ambulatory limitations may be possible with prior arrangements.

Timing: 6:00 AM - 10:30 AM; Volunteers MUST be on the Festival grounds by 6:00 AM.

Parking Assistance

2 volunteers

Description: Volunteers assist in holding parking spaces for service professionals and assisting those parking vehicles on and near the festival ground.

Requirements: This position requires a valid driver’s license and use of a vehicle. Vehicle will be used only to temporarily hold a parking space from 6:00 AM to 9:30 AM.

Timing: 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM; Volunteers in vehicles MUST be on the Festival grounds by 6:00 AM.

Runners

5 volunteers per shift

Description: Volunteers assist with various tasks and assignments as assigned by Board Members. Due to the need-based nature of this role, specific duties cannot be determined in advance.  

Requirements: The physical demands for this position is unknown; however, those with special needs may serve to the extent they are able.  

Timing: One 4-hour shift: 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, OR 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Navigators

2-3 volunteers per shift

Description: Volunteers assist with accessible parking and entertainer parking, help direct attendees to the festival location, and other navigational tasks as needed.

Requirements: Individuals must be able to move about and have a general familiarity with the festival grounds and surrounding areas.

Timing: One 4-hour shift either from 6:00 AM - 10:00 AM, 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM, OR 2:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Information Booth

2 volunteers per shift

Description: Volunteers sit at the information booth and attend to guest needs. This includes checking in volunteers and vendors, selling raffle tickets, accepting donations for gifts, providing information and resources (with assistance), and other tasks.  

Requirements: No physical demand; however, social interactions are required.

Timing: One 4-hour shift either from 6:30 AM - 10:30 AM, 10:30 AM - 2:30 PM, OR 2:30 PM - 6:30 PM.

Silent Witness Peacekeepers

6-10 volunteers at each of 3 locations per shift

Description: Silent witness Peacekeepers Alliance (SWPA) is an organization of gay and straight allies dedicated to providing a non-confrontational buffer between the LGBTQ+ community and those who would protest LGBTQ+ events. As a SWPA volunteer you will serve as a peacekeeper, not a counter-protester, protecting everyone’s right to free speech.

Requirements: All SWPA volunteers must have previous training or attend a 2-hour training in July. This training will be scheduled based on volunteer and trainer availability with 2 in-person training in Harrisburg, PA and one virtual training session available.

Gate Captain

1 volunteer at each of 3 gates

Description: Gate Captains are responsible for the smooth operation and management of the festival entry and exit points. They manage and supervise the collection of entrance donations and staffing of the gates in their area of responsibility. Gate Captains are considered Festival Staff and manage/adjust volunteers assignments to their gate as needed.

Requirements: This position will require the volunteer to stand for long periods of time and have the math, people, and supervisory skills necessary to manage and support Gate Attendant/Bucket Brigade Volunteers.

Timing: Gate Captains are required to work the entire day of the Festival from 10:15 AM to 5:15 PM. These positions also may require training in addition to the general training for all volunteers.

Gate Attendant / Bucket Brigade

3 - 5 volunteers at each of 3 gates per shift

Description: Volunteers have the opportunity to be a part of the Pride Festival welcoming committee by collecting entrance donations or passing out Pride Guides at event entry point(s).

Requirements: Volunteers collecting money must have good math skills including knowing how to make change. These positions require some physical activity and long periods of standing. Accommodations for those with special needs might be possible with prior arrangements.

Timing: One 3.5-hour shift either from 10:30 AM - 2:00 PM OR 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM.

Gate Safety

12+ volunteers

Description: Volunteers may do one or more of the following tasks: search bags for hazardous materials or weapons, scan entrants with a metal detection wand, and/or put wristbands on entrants (and identify QR code to rules of participation and entry on band).

Requirements: This position requires social interaction and long periods of standing. While volunteers will be supported by security staff in the event of any concerns, volunteers may need to calmly interact with individuals of concern until security is alerted.

Timing: One 3.5-hour shift either from 10:30 AM - 2:00 PM OR 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM.

Entertainment Assistance

5-7 volunteers at each of 2 stages per shift

Description: Volunteers assist with activities and events at one of two Pride Festival stage locations. This might include things like loading/unloading equipment, running errands for entertainers, crowd management, and other related tasks.

Requirements: Individuals must be able to move about and lift moderate objects. Interpersonal skills are required for some positions.

Timing: One 3.5-hour shift either from 10:30 AM - 2:00 PM OR 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM.

Tear Down

12+ volunteers

Description: Volunteers assist with any teardown needs, walk the grounds to pick up left items, and ensure the site is as good or better after the Festival than before the Festival.

Requirements: This position requires physical work including some lifting, walking, carrying, bending, and other related tasks.

Timing: Volunteers must be available at the end and after the Festival. The clean-up work typically begins around 6:00 PM after most of the Festival patrons and vendors have vacated the park and lasts for up to three hours. The official shift period is listed as 5:45 PM to 7:00 PM (or when done earlier/later).
