Ladder?

Hat -

Appa - Legend on NA with Odd Paladin. Went undefeated from 2.1 -> Legend. Rank 2 on EU. Been laddering with miracle rogue, but the Paladins and Hunters just wanna keep me down

Botticus - Had a nice break from playing.  Not sure what August looks like in terms of tryharding but the end of the year should be packed.

Guest- Legend in 2 days with Spell Hunter

High Level Recap

Light tournament week - Global Games and ESL Premiership just started, but no major events.

Let’s take a second to make sure we talk about the HGG format.

In this standard format tournament, each team prepares all 9 classes with open lists. Both teams then go through a pick-and-ban process and end up with 5 classes, pick the order that each deck will be played in secret, and then play it out until one of the teams has won 3 games! It’s an interesting and diverse format that shows off a variety of decks. Keep in mind that a predictable meta is much harder to come by here, especially with the 9-deck and fixed-order nature of the matches - the decks you see here are unlikely to translate well to success on the ladder or in most tournaments.

We don’t have decklists right now, and the tournaments are… unusually formatted.

Games To Watch

GER vs NL -

These two teams are full of streamer and tournament stars. Germany has Seiko, Viper, Sintolol, and reigning HCT Summer champ Bunnyhoppor. Meanwhile, The Netherlands have Tyler, Mitsuhide, Theo, and ThijsNL. When the two teams come together to fight, there are bound to be some fireworks!

We aren’t going to go into every single game here, but this is a great series worth watching - with the skillful navigation leading to a crazy roll to close out game 1 to the return of Corridor Creeper in the odd paladin mirror match in game 2. Game 3, on the other hand, is a case study in the constant back and forth between midrange and control. Theo from the Netherlands is playing Mind Blast Priest, a control deck that has faded away in the current meta on ladder but is still seeing some representation in tournaments. Meanwhile, Viper is playing the new hotness in Cube Hunter with Devilsaur Eggs scrambling the opponent’s board clears. You can tell right away that Theo knows how dangerous those Eggs are, especially with Terrorscale Stalker and Play Dead present in the list - so much so that a turn 2 coined out Egg is immediately popped by Acidic Swamp Ooze! Theo would rather face a 5/5 than let Viper make all the 5/5s he wants, and a second egg on turn 3 gets popped again by Scaleworm, leading to a suddenly even board state despite Viper being given two 5/5s by his opponent.

At this point, Theo starts to do what Priest is best at - nothing! Viper’s hand is awkward enough that he needs to Carnivorous Cube a Leokk, while Theo has to decide if he hero powers himself or his opponent. Still, Hunter can amass pressure quickly, and even when Mass Dispelled, a board of a Cube, Fire Fly, and Prince Keleseth applies enough pressure that Theo needs to start responding before his life total drops even further into the danger zone. A Psychic Scream into a Duskbreaker and Twilight Drake later, and it seems like Theo may be finally starting to stabilize… and when Viper decides he has to Carnivorous Cube a Fire Fly (!) into a Primordial Drake, it seems as though the door is all but shut.

Still… Viper has a Houndmaster Shaw in play and a King Krush in hand, and Theo has the board now but doesn’t have any guarantee he’s going to keep it. Now, that King Krush comes down next turn, and Theo has Twilight Acolyte into Cabal Shadow Priest… but he doesn’t have a dragon to steal the giant dinosaur! He does topdeck a Shadowreaper Anduin, though, and next turn the death knight ushers in the extinction of the King. Psychic Scream follows and all seems to be over… until the German team celebrates as Viper topdecks Deathstalker Rexxar. We’ve got a ballgame, especially with Theo down to 8 and Viper at 35!

That first roll of Rexxar gets a 7/7 stealthed Zombeast… and with a Candleshot up, that’s exactly 8. Theo has 17 showing thanks to an offensive Alexstrasza, but Viper’s at 20. And with that, the game ends suddenly despite a very hard battle from the Priest to come so close to stabilization and fall so far.

Game 4 is great to watch too, and we recommend you watch this whole series if you can!
