GRADE 9

ADA 1OI

Drama

This course provides fun ways for students to experiment with drama forms, elements, techniques, games, and skills using material from different sources and cultures. Students will learn the basics of tableaux, mime, stage combat, and greek theatre.  Students will use their body, mind, voice and movement to create and perform characters, scenes and situations and communicate meaning. This course will help students develop 21st century skills such as problem solving, team building, cooperation, creativity, empathy and flexibility.  Prerequisite:  None

ALC 1OI

Art technologies

This course integrates several areas of the arts with technology to focus on the "arts in a digital age". Areas of focus include graphic design and communication, character development, voice acting, digital recording and editing, soundscapes and Foleys, photography, 3-point and portraiture lighting, digital editing, scriptwriting and storyboarding, and set/stage design, and video techniques and creation. Students will explore the ways in which technology enhances  the  arts  though  "behind  the  scene  experiences". Intended as an exploration in the IAP and for future specialization in SHSM, and/or Productions Technologies: Media Arts Technologies Stream or Productions Technologies: Technical Productions Stream of the IAP, this course may also be counted as a minor for the IAP Enriched. We call this the ‘smorgasbord course, where you will sample many different options available at the Arts & Tech technologies buffet. Prerequisite:  None

AMI 1OI

Instrumental Music, Experienced

In this fun class, students will develop their chosen instrument skills within full band, small ensemble, and individual settings. Students will participate in engaging activities that develop self-confidence, creativity, imagination, and leadership.  Essential theory and music technology is covered to provide the tools for students to write their own music.  At least one year experience on the student’s chosen instrument is highly recommended.  Prerequisite:  Prior instrumental experience

AMI 1OX

Instrumental Music, Beginner

This course is designed to teach beginner level concert band music.  It is also designed to develop reading skills for students with experience, but do not know how to read sheet music.   Prerequisite:  None

AMS 1OI

Strings, Experienced

Students with previous strings experience, either in elementary school or private lessons, continue theory and repertoire studies.  Prerequisite: Prior strings experience

AMS 1OX

Strings, Beginner

Students, with no previous experience are introduced to a string instrument, e.g. violin, viola, cello, or double bass.  Please note: Guitar in not an option in this course.  Prerequisite:  None

AMV 1OI

Vocal Music

Learn to be a more confident solo and ensemble singer through repertoire and theory studies.  Prerequisite:  None

ATC 1OI

Dance

Basic  movement  skills  in jazz,  and  modern  dance  plus  safety principles, technical terminology, history and cultural significance. Students prepare dance works to be presented in informal and formal settings in narrative composition.  Enhancement fee: $10.   Prerequisite:  None

AVI 1OI

Visual Arts

Students  will  gain  an  in-depth  understanding  of  composition, design, and creative problem solving through a variety of techniques, processes and styles. This comprehensive course covers a variety of mediums including: drawing, tempera painting, clay, printmaking and computer graphics.

This course offers an overview of visual arts as a foundation for further study. Students will become familiar with the elements and principles of design and the expressive qualities of various materials using a variety of techniques, processes and styles. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of early Western art history periods, as well as Canadian art and the art of other cultures.

ADA 2OI

Drama

This course provides engaging opportunities for students to explore a variety of drama and theatre forms, styles, and techniques. The basics of drama are emphasized with a focus on developing characters, scenes, and situations through non-verbal and physical means (stage combat, physical theatre, and Commedia Dell’Arte). This course will help students develop 21st century skills such as leadership, initiative, collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking.  Prerequisite:  None, but ADA 1OI is strongly recommended

AMI 2OI

Instrumental Music

Students will develop their chosen instrument skills within full band, small ensemble, and individual settings.  At least one year experience on the student’s chosen instrument is highly recommended.  Essential theory and technology is covered with composition as the focus.  Students will participate in fun, engaging activities that develop self-confidence, creativity, historical knowledge imagination and leadership.   Prerequisite:  None, but AMI 1OI is strongly recommended

Strings

Students  will  continue  to  study  string  instrument  techniques:  vibrato, shifting, bowing; along with form, style and interpretation of music. Participation in the orchestra is encouraged.  Prerequisite:  None, but AMS 1OI is strongly recommended.

Vocal Music

The fundamentals of good solo and ensemble singing continue to be developed through traditional and modern repertoire and theory studies.  Prerequisite:  None, but AMV 1OI is strongly recommended.

ASM 2OI

Media Arts

Building  on  the  skills  developed  in  the  ALC 1O,  this  course integrates several areas of the arts by combining a variety of traditional techniques & emergent technologies. Areas of focus include performance space awareness, graphic design and typography, digital photography, additive and subtractive colour and light, film & animation, sound/song creation and film and installation art. Students will acquire communications skills that are transferable beyond the media arts classroom and develop an understanding of responsible practices related to the creative process. Visual Arts, Experienced

Visual art techniques and skills are further developed through a range of mediums including drawing, acrylic painting, dry point, etching, sculpture, and computer graphics, focusing on creativity, fantasy and surrealism.

This course emphasizes learning through practice, building on what students know, and introducing them to new ideas, materials and processes for artistic thinking and experimentation. Students will also learn about the connections between works of art and their historical contexts. Fantasy, surrealism and creativity are the focus for this course. A further fine art studio experiences in drawing, printmaking, painting, graphic arts and sculpture are taught. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study Western art history periods, as well as Canadian art and the art of other cultures.

Materials Enhancement: $5.

Prerequisite:  None, but AVI 1OI is strongly recommended.

AVI 2OX

Visual Arts, Beginner

An introduction to the fundamental skills in drawing, painting, clay and computer graphics, students will also gain an understanding of composition, design and problem solving skills. Students will gain  an  understanding  of  composition,  design,  and  creative problem solving. This course is intended for the first time studio artist who missed the opportunity to take grade 9 art.  Prerequisite:  None

GRADE 11

ADA 3MI

Drama

This course requires students to analyze, interpret and perform dramatic works from a variety of cultures and time periods. Students will explore a variety of acting theories, styles and conventions for use in performance.  There is a particular focus on interpreting, analyzing and performing Canadian theatre.  Students will use journals and adjudications for reflection.  Prerequisite: ADA 1OI or ADA 2OI

AMI 3MI

Instrumental Music

This senior music course is the next sequential step to achieving musical mastery on the student’s chosen instrument(s).  Students will further develop creative and performance skills in large group, small ensemble and individual settings.  Music from various eras and styles will be performed and studied.   Prerequisite: AMI 1OI or AMI 2OI

AMM 3MI

Music Studio

Students have the opportunity to compose and arrange using a professional grade sound recording studio and cutting-edge music technology.  Students will learn how the play guitar and write music with simple to advanced guitar chord progressions.  The piano keyboard will also be explored.  Prerequisite: Any Gr. 9 or Gr. 10 music course

AMS 3MI

Strings

A continuation of AMS 2OI.  Studies focus on violin, viola, cello, or double bass. Participation in orchestra is encouraged.  Prerequisite: AMS 1OI or AMS 2OI

AMV 3MI

Vocal Music

Vocal  techniques and music theory continue to be developed through a variety of repertoire and performance opportunities. Prerequisite: AMV 1OI or AMV 2OI

ASM 3OI

Introduction to Film Video

Students will study classic and non-mainstream filmmakers to learn the basics of film art, which they apply in two short films they shoot and edit.  Prerequisite: None

ATC 3MI

Dance

Develops movement in jazz, ballet and modern dance with a focus on  dance  as  an  art  of  the  individual.  Students will study the pioneers of dance and focus on solo composition  and improvisation. Enhancement fee: $10. Prerequisite: ATC 1OI orATC 2OI

AVI 3MI

Visual Arts

This is a comprehensive course exploring a variety of media techniques including large clay, acrylic paint drawing and printmaking.

This course provides students with opportunities to further develop their skills and knowledge in visual arts. Students will explore a range of subject matter through studio activities and will consolidate their practical skills. Students will also analyze artworks and study Western art history as well as Canadian art forms and art from around the world. This advanced course offers intensive study and practice in a variety of media and techniques. Personal imagery and ideas will be developed in the pursuit of an individual artistic vision, with parallel development of skills in the use of materials and knowledge of compositional elements and their effects on visual dynamics.

 Materials Enhancement: $10.  Prerequisite: AVII 1OI or AVI 2OI  (AVI 2OI is recommended)

AWQ 3MI

Photography

This is an introductory course to photography that will cover the use of the 35mm SLR camera and darkroom work that includes processing and printing your own black and white film and prints.

This course focuses on studio activities in photography using various techniques (35mm black and white, digital still, computer enhanced). The photography course deals with developing an appreciation of photography as an artistic medium covering elementary theory, types of cameras, film and print techniques and pictorial composition. Cameras will be available for sharing, but owning a SLR camera is highly advantageous

  Enhancement fee: $55.  Prerequisite: AVI 1OI, AVI 2OI, ALC 1OI, or ASM 2OI

AWS 3MI

Computer Art/Digital Media

Same essential course content as AWS 3OI but students obtaining the AWS 3MI credit will have additional theory responsibilities and more in depth versions of the assignments.

This special series course uses industry standard software as the primary medium to expand design and artistic skills. Special attention is given to Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Typography, photography and design composition are focal points in a diverse range of projects that will challenge students to think creatively using current technology. Using industry standard software, students will develop an understanding of the programs, as well as a strong sense of design, typography, composition and layout as they develop a professional looking personal digital portfolio. If you have ever looked at an image and wondered how they do that-come find out!

  Materials Enhancement fee: $5.  Prerequisite: AVI 1OI or AVI 2OI, ALC 1OI, or ASM 2OI

AWS 3OI

ADA 4MI

Drama

In this comprehensive course students will create and perform a series of dramatic pieces both individually and collaboratively.  This course requires students to create, perform, analyze, and interpret dramatic works from a variety of cultures and time periods while exploring acting theories and approaches to directing and stage craft. Students will learn about the roles of playwrights, directors, actors, designers, technicians and audiences; and the purpose of different styles of theatre (Epic Theatre, Theatre of Cruelty, Absurdism, Theatre for Young Audiences). Students’ final culminating performance will be geared towards a live audience.  Prerequisite: ADA 3MI

AEA 4OI

Media Arts

Incorporating a range of arts and media arts disciplines, students will evaluate, create and promote art works and productions in a variety of established and experimental techniques. This course will focus on students using the creative process individually and/or collaboratively create works such as collaborative projects for print or digital spaces, site specific works, and/or non-traditional performance/installation/presentation. Materials enhancement fee may be incurred depending on the materials proposed by the student.   Prerequisite: AVI 1OI or AVI 2OX or ALC 1OI or ASM 2OI

Yearbook - Applied Journalism

This course will introduce the student to all  facets of yearbook production, journalism, layout, design, photography, publishing, and marketing. This course uses industry standard software and processes to give you a real-life experience of publishing a book.

While previous desktop publishing and/or graphic design skills are desirable, they are not essential, as the necessary knowledge and skills will be taught.  This course offers a fantastic experience in authentic learning where team-building and the ability to meet deadlines are an asset. A selection process is required to determine the class.  Prerequisite:  Strong desire to develop school yearbook.

IDC 4UI

Music Studio

This course is an introduction to the theory and technical tools used in today’s modern music studios.  Topics of study will include songwriting and production, audio engineering on analog and digital  equipment, with an emphasis on hands-on  training  and

experiential learning.  Guest  speakers  may  include  industry professionals and musicians.

Prerequisite: Any Gr. 11 Music course

Dance

Students will develop and present complex compositions, develop difficult  technical  skills  and  take  on  roles  as  choreographers, production  personnel  and  evaluators  of  dance  performances. There is a research component in Canadian Dance.  Enhancement fee: $10.  Prerequisite: ATC 3MI

AVI 4MI

Visual Arts

This is the course to develop the ultimate portfolio for college/university entrance. This comprehensive course builds on all of the skills and knowledge acquired to date. Students will use their advanced understanding of the mediums and techniques to create a body of original works of personal expression and powerful design. The course follows the journey of the monomyth and students will discover how to interpret, analyze and communicate their artistic intent through a wide range of mediums. They will learn and use methods of analysis and criticism and will study the characteristics of modern Western art history periods, as well as Canadian art and the art of other cultures. Students hoping to write the AP exam for Art History should take this course. Be prepared to uncover your soul and display your work as course includes exhibiting in a professional or community space as part of the culminating unit.  Prerequisite: AVI 3MI

AWD 4MI

Graphic Design

Using both industry standard graphics software and traditional media in the studio, students will explore design, typography, composition, and layout with an emphasis on professionalism and portfolio building for college and university. Visual literacy, critical thinking and analytical skills that are widely transferable will be a continuous focus.

 Enhancement fee: $5.   Prerequisite: AVI 3MI or AWS 3MI (AWS 3OI or AWS 3MI may be considered pending approval of Visual Arts Department Head)

AWR 4MI

Film Video

This course builds on the skills covered in ASM 3OI.  Students with  a special interest in film, study classic and contemporary/non-mainstream films and then apply the theory in two, 10-15 minute films they shoot and edit.
