What is my child learning at school? How can a parent review these materials? | In North Carolina, all schools use the same Standard Course of Study, determined by the State Board of Education. These standards are the knowledge and skills students should understand by the end of each grade/course. The following standards can be found on the website below: Arts Education, Computer Science, English Language Arts, English Language Development, Student Success Standards, Healthful Living, Information and Technology, Mathematics, Science, Social Studies, and World Language. NCDPI Office of Academic Standards website School leaders and teachers determine how to teach these standards, including curriculum, supplementary materials, books, etc. BHCS is a Core Knowledge School, as written in our charter. Core Knowledge complements the North Carolina Standard Course of Study by providing a more detailed and organized standards that aligns with the state's educational goals. Here’s how: Content Match: Core Knowledge covers topics that align with what North Carolina expects students to learn, ensuring they meet state standards. Added Depth: It offers a more thorough approach, helping students not only meet but also exceed state requirements by deepening their understanding. Building Knowledge: Core Knowledge builds on what students learn year after year, which fits well with the state’s focus on skill progression. Well-Rounded Education: It covers a wide range of subjects, making sure students are fully prepared for state tests and future learning. Core Knowledge works well with North Carolina's standards by providing a more detailed and enriching education. For more information on Core Knowledge, visit https://www.coreknowledge.org/ Parental Review of Curricular Materials Parents/guardians have the right to review the instructional materials used in their child's education. Information on how to review these materials will be available on the school website and for in-person review at the school. To maintain transparency, the school will post a list of textbooks and supplemental materials by grade level on the website. This list will be updated as new materials are added. Parents can request to review materials by filling out a digital form. The principal or a designated staff member will respond within 10 business days to arrange an in-person review or provide an extension if needed. Parents can review all instructional materials, including textbooks, digital resources, and supplementary materials. If parents have concerns about the materials due to inaccuracies, inappropriate content, or misalignment with educational standards, they can file an objection. This requires submitting a written statement with supporting details using the electronic form. The objection must be submitted within 10 business days of the review. The principal and a curriculum review committee, including educators, administrators, and a parent representative, will evaluate the objection. They will respond within 10 business days, either in writing or by scheduling a meeting. If the material is deemed appropriate or if the objection is justified, the parent will be informed of the decision and any curriculum changes. If the objection is denied or the principal does not respond, parents can appeal in writing to the Board of Directors. All objections will be kept confidential to protect family privacy. The school will report annually to the State Board of Education on objections, hearings, appeals, and any actions taken. HEALTHFUL LIVING: Reproductive Health and Safety BHCS is dedicated to implementing a comprehensive school health program that equips students with accurate information and encourages them to take responsibility for their health and behavior. We acknowledge the crucial role of parents/guardians in ensuring their children's health and well-being and actively seek to involve them in the school's health initiatives. Our health education program adheres to all state and federal legal requirements and aligns with the objectives outlined in the North Carolina Standard Course of Study, as adopted by the State Board of Education. Health education is provided to students from grades K-5. At this time, BHCS does not teach any lessons regarding Reproductive Health and Safety (Family Life Education). |

How can a parent help their child develop citizenship, social skills and respect for others? | Each month, BHCS teaches character traits because they are foundational to a child's overall development, influencing not just their academic success but also their social and emotional well-being. By learning different traits, children develop the ability to form positive relationships, understand and manage their emotions, and make ethical decisions. These traits also foster a strong work ethic and perseverance, which are crucial for academic achievement. Teaching character traits from a young age helps children grow into well-rounded individuals who are equipped to contribute positively to society, both as students and as future adults. Here are the character traits for each month: By integrating these approaches into parenting, you can help nurture your child's citizenship, social skills, and respect for others, promoting their overall development effectively. |
