You are required to read two books in preparation for our class, and the first book listed below is mandatory for all students:

Thank You For Arguing What Aristotle, Lincoln, and Homer Simpson Can Teach Us About the Art of Persuasion by Jay Heinrichs

READ and ANNOTATE or MIND MAP (see instructions below) the INTRODUCTION and OFFENSE sections

(Chapters 1 through 13)

(Buy the least expensive version, if you purchase it.)

HOW IS THIS BOOK RELEVANT?

This book offers an overview of new terms and concepts we will use in our class throughout the year. The more you review these terms and concepts over the summer, the more well prepared and confident you will feel as we apply the vocabulary and skills to our writing, discussions, and reading. You must take the time to read, review, and study the information in this book to make an easier transition to our course once we meet in September.

Remember: this is a college-level course and the majority of the information will be entirely new to you. The book may seem challenging, therefore, you will have to dedicate a significant amount of time to studying the material to learn it well. However, the time you invest in building these skills over the summer will help you be successful throughout the school year. This is the first step toward making sure that you are as prepared as possible for our AP exam in May. Knowing the terms and concepts in this book will allow you to focus on strategically improving your reading, speaking, and writing abilities throughout the year.

YOUR FIRST TASK: Select one of the following two options for interacting with Thank You For Arguing:

  1. Mind Map on Blank Sheets of Paper: As you read, create a separate mind map for each chapter or subsection. Please review the mindmap slideshow on the Google Classroom AP Lang Toms River East Summer Community.

OR

  1. Annotate on Post-Its: If you prefer to write annotations on post-its, be sure to record new terms and concepts as you take notes. Record questions if you do not understand a concept and try to summarize what you read every page or two to make sure you have a firm grasp on the material outlined in each section. If you would like to both mind map AND annotate using post-its, please feel free to do so. The effort you invest now will translate to greater success in our class. Please review the reading and annotating strategies slideshow on the AP Lang Toms River East Summer Community for assistance.

*Annotating and mind mapping must be hand-written, and we encourage you to use colored pencils or pens and colored post-its, if you have them.

After you read Thank You For Arguing (chapters 1-13), select any one of the following books to read and annotate or mind map:

YOUR NEXT TASK:

  1. As you read one of the books above, either mind map or annotate the sections.

AND Complete

  1. Part I: Retype three passages that illustrate three of the style elements or rhetorical devices, appeals, or techniques Heinrichs features in Thank You For Arguing that you find in the non-fiction book you chose from the list above.
  1. Part II: When you come into class this September, you will be asked to write a rhetorical analysis essay on these texts. You will need to explain the following:

NOTE: The three passages you choose for Part I focus on the nonfiction book you selected from the list above. You are applying what you learn in Thank You For Arguing to analyze, I Am Malala, for example. To organize the assignment, refer to the sample document attached to these instructions.


Please be sure to save everything above in the same Google Doc and use the MLA heading since we will ask you to submit your typed work to Turnitin.com during the first week of school. Remember that all quoted text must be cited using the MLA format  (Yousafzai 46) OR (Heinrich 27) and a properly formatted MLA works cited page for both books.

Bring in a printed copy of the typed assignment for Part I on the first day of school in addition to the annotated books.

Again, you will have to submit this assignment to Turnitin.com during the first week of school.

Other Suggested Reading: The Elements of Style by William Strunk, Jr., They Say, I Say by Cathy Birkenstein and Gerald Graff, Eats, Shoots and Leaves by Lynne Truss, Several Short Sentences About Writing by Verlyn Klinkenborg, or Rhetorical Grammar by Martha J. Kolln and Loretta Gray are great resources. If you are able to read any of them or pick up a copy, they are helpful writing, punctuation, and grammar guides.

*Please feel free to use this document as a template for your summer assignment and save it into a single Google Doc on your school account.

Save your file as: Your First and Last Name AP Lang Summer Assignment

 

*All of your work for the three passages should be saved to the same Google Doc.

*Part I should be printed and brought to class the first day, but you will add Part II during the first week or two of school when your teacher assigns the deadline for the analysis paper. Some students have asked if they can do Part II prior to the first week, but please wait until class begins as we will provide specific required guidelines when you return to school.

*** Remember that both Thank You For Arguing and the other book you select from the list should be mind mapped on paper or annotated using post-its or some system of thorough note-taking and brought to class the first day of school.
