THINGS TO DO IN AND NEAR ST. GEORGE, UTAH

Organized by distance from Rocky Vista University: 255 E Center St, Ivins, UT 84738

*By Josh (Med Student in the class of 2022) and Larissa Clason (super awesome med wife)* Last Edited May 2021

Tips

1. Make sure to bring lots of water with you as the temperatures here reach a high of over 100 in the summer months.

2. Many of the places are extremely close to others so be sure to take a look at what else is close by in order to not backtrack when doing numerous activities.

3. Southern Utah is home to rabbits, deer, snakes, coyotes, tortoises, etc. Be careful when out adventuring!

4. If you only have a short amount of time we always suggest going to Snow Canyon or Pioneer Park as both places have a lot to see and are easy to get to. BUY THE STATE PARK PASS IF YOU LIVE HERE. No seriously, do it. If not for yourself do it to show off Snow Canyon to those who visit and brag about how awesome it is to live here.

Icon Key/Tips

Cost Money: The cost will range from place, to age, to item. If there is a cost associated it will be listed by individual place.

Free: Adventuring with no cost! Most of the outdoor adventures are free as well as many different places within downtown Saint George.

Seasonal: I will let you know why. This is the desert so some of the smaller water places may dry up towards the end of the summer. Keep this in mind while planning your activities.

Family Friendly: Child approved and loved. Most of the places are family friendly and those which are not are mainly for safety issues or age requirements.

Can Get Wet: I will let you know when you WILL get wet with an asterisk and a note. Most of the places marked by this symbol have water features but do not necessarily mean you will get wet.

Dirt Road: This means you will need to drive on a dirt road to get there. However, you will not need a dirt bike/ATV/etc. to get there, a minivan will do just fine as long as you're ok kicking up some dirt.

Atv/Off-Roading: I will let you know when you WILL need these with an asterisk and a note. If it is not required that means that there are trails you can ride on but don’t need to in order to get there.

Paved: If it is marked with this symbol then there is either a paved parking lot, paved areas to get there, or a paved trail to walk/hike on.

Dog Friendly: Furry friends can come with you when you see the paw print. Be aware however that some places will require your pet on a leash while others will not.

Hiking: Some parks marked with this symbol are to inform you that there are trails you can hike on if you choose to. Many hiking trails will have red sand so don’t wear your favorite tennis shoes.

Price

-Free

Information

-7-mile round-trip hike from chuckwalla, 3.5 mile round-trip from Snow Canyon

-Starting out on the Chuckwalla Trail from the parking lot, you'll immediately encounter a large area designated for rock climbing. After a short while you'll reach a fork in the trail; take the North Crossing Trail, which is clearly marked. Soon you'll pass the Turtle Wall Trail, which has some terrific sandstone formations. When you reach Paradise RIm Trail you will encounter the views of the town below and begin to walk along the canyon edge. Stay on the canyon rim heading north and you will see a marker for the Scout Cave Trail. This way took us a while to find the cave. You will reach an area where the trail will zig zag. From there continue on and the cave will be on your right. You can’t miss it so if you’re looking at the rocks getting frustrated because you can’t find it just keep going.

-Starting from the South entrance parking lot from Snow Canyon you will cross the street and follow the trail markers for scout cave.

-The coolest feature on this trail is definitely Scout Cave and the section of the trail leading up to it. The route descends a bit into a ravine where the features become more surreal and unique. The cave itself is tall and not terribly deep, but the view from the inside looking out is quite impressive, especially considering the easy access and proximity to town.

-There is a scale there and you weigh it and pay either cash in their drop box or via venmo. It is a weigh and pay by yourself farm so you will probably not see anyone there who is “in charge.”

-CHERRIES:

-GPS will not take you to the proper address but these are the instructions form the farm: Take 700 West in Hurricane south until you reach 2060 south. Turn right on 2060 south. This road will become 1100 west. Keep following until you see the sign “Cherry Orchard” on the right hand side of the road.

-You will have to open the gate from the road but there will be a sign to their farm outside the gate. From there park in the dirt parking lot and walk on over to the cherries. Ladders are already provided.

Sheep's Bridge swimming hole

Time to get there

46 minute drive

Address

South side of Virgin River, just off Sheep Bridge Road, Virgin, UT

Price

-Free

Information

-Sheep's Bridge is an old bridge where they used to charge farmers to use it to get sheep across the Virgin River. A little ways up, the gorge widens into a swimming hole where you can also cliff jump if you would like to. The mid to end of summer is the best time to go as the water will be warm enough to just walk on in.

-After you are on “Sheep Bridge Rd” you will follow the dirt road until reaching a bridge. From here you have two options. If you trust your car to go over a couple of rough bumps along the way then take a left and follow that to the parking area. IF you don’t want to drive your car there then after crossing the bridge you will park on the right hand side of the road in the dirt parking area and wall the rest of the way. It is not a long walk by any means but I wouldn’t want to be hauling around any big items from that further parking lot.

-Directions: (Exactly 5 miles past the LaVerkin Maverik) 1. Turn right after Desert Garden Estates subdivision on Sheep Bridge Rd. If you make it to the touristy little western town (Fort Zion), you've gone too far. 2. It's .7 miles past the turn off from SR-9. Turn up through this open gate to the parking area.

Babylon Arch Trail/Babylon Arch Beach

Time to get there

47 minute drive

Address

Babylon Arch Trailhead, Hurricane, UT 84737

Price

-Free

Information

-2.80 mi round trip.

-”The dirt/rock/sand road from Leeds to the trailhead is usually passable with two-wheel drive unless it has recently rained, in which case you will want four-wheel drive”

-The arch can be difficult to find but if you run into a steep sand hill go down it and the arch will be at the bottom. The other way to find the arch is to make it to the river and then follow the signs backwards to find it.

-A small sandstone arch, great desert geology, backcountry campsites, and access to the Virgin River.

-On the border of Leeds and Hurricane just off the highway.

-”There are lots of routes to get down to the beach. If you reach a fork in the path, heading right is usually pretty helpful, but most everything leads to the same general place. There are some sign markers and cairns along the way, but as long as you stay within the general heading you will reach a similar destination. There are a few spots that are deep enough to get fully into the water, and there are some great little alcoves in the red rocks.”

-”Directions:  From St George, head north on I-15 for about 13 miles and take exit 22 to Leeds/Silver Reef. Head north on Hwy 228/Main Street for 2 miles and take a right onto 900 North (there is a sign indicating Red Cliffs National Conservation Area). Follow 900 North for about 3 miles and turn left after the sign indicating Sand Cove Trailhead.”

Address

Warner Valley Dinosaur Tracks - Hurricane, UT

Price

Information

-Easy 0.4 miles round-trip hike. There will be a dirt parking lot and the trail begins at the back of it. There is a dirt off roading trail to the left of the parking area but that will not take you to the same place.

-If you are going just to see tracks then you will enjoy this. Otherwise it is a bit out of the way with nothing else nearby. You may want to bring crayons and paper to make prints of the tracks with your kids as well as some paint brushes so they can move around the sand as the tracks often get covered.

Pictures:

*This is doable in any car ONLY if the weather has been good for the last couple weeks. Otherwise you will need this.

Time to get there

1 hour drive

Address

Yant Flat, Leeds Utah 84780

Price

-Free

Information

-Personally I think this is the best hike here as it is the best view for the least amount of work.

-You will be off roading for the majority of the time to drive to this trail but if you do through Leeds you will be able to make it in any car. However, if you go through St. George instead you will need an ATV/Truck/etc.

-Hiking across candy like swirls. This trail is 2.6 miles round trip. However, once you get there you will probably want to explore as the view is amazing so plan for that as well.

-There will be a dirt parking area big enough for about 10 cars or so. You can’t miss it as this is the only area big enough for that many cars to park on the entire length of this road. Once you park there are two trails. One is ATV drivable and is not the trail you are looking for. The other is blocked by boulders so no ATVs can get through. Take the boulder trail (see first picture below.)

Address

La Verkin, UT 84745

Information

-Will be off roading to get there this is not a hike. People take dirt bikes, 4-wheelers, etc. We took our 4 runner up but my husband has a lot of off-roading experience.

-Toquerville is about 30 minutes north of St. George however, the offroading makes it about an hour and 15 minute trip to get there.

-Drive right up to it and there’s no hiking required.

-You can jump from the middle level into the bottom pool.

-Enjoy playing in the pools and enjoying the sunshine.

-Take exit 27 for UT-17. The road will wind through a little canyon and then dip down into the tiny town. Take the very first left onto Spring Drive. It will turn into a dirt road and you follow it all the way to the falls. There are a few forks, but at all the major ones you stay right.

Pictures:

*You need either an ATV, dirt bike or to know how to seriously off-road to get here.

*You will most likely get wet here.
