A Visitor’s Guide to Our Church

Welcome to Saint Michael Ukrainian Orthodox Church!  Our parish was founded by Ukrainian immigrants in the early 20th century.  The Orthodox faith is the unchanged faith of the Apostolic Church, the church of the seven ecumenical councils and, as such, we believe it to be the true Christian faith.  The Ukrainian Orthodox Church prides herself in her adherence to the Traditions of Orthodoxy and in her ability to spread the good news of Christ’s message by making these traditions applicable to modern life. Many of the visitors and members of our Church come from a variety of backgrounds and experiences and we welcome new members from all ethnicities.  If you are an inquirer, Father Borislav, our current pastor, would enjoy meeting you!

The Eucharistic Divine Liturgy is scheduled on Sundays at 9:00 a.m.  All are invited to attend.  A coffee hour in the church hall immediately follows each Sunday Liturgy.  We invite you to attend our many social functions throughout the year including St. Michael’s feast day in the fall, a St. Nicholas play and celebration in December, Ukrainian Christmas

festivities in January, and Easter worship and blessings in the spring.

We trust you will find your day with us enjoyable as well as informational.  For further information please inquire about our church brochure and feel free to consult with Father Borislav Kroner or any parish  member.  We welcome new parishioners and hope you will consider making St. Michael’s your spiritual home.

December 16- 11th Annual Cookie Walk

A Visitor’s Guide to Our Traditional Foods

Varenyky (or pyrohy or perogies) are dough pockets filled with potato and cheese or kapusta (sauerkraut).  Varenyky are very are often served with onions and sour cream.  The word "varenyky" is used throughout Ukraine. The word "pyrohy" is used by Ukrainian American and Ukrainian Canadian descendents of pre World War I settlers from Western Ukraine.

Holubsti are Ukrainian cabbage rolls. The filling is mainly rice with a small amount of hamburger and pork (unlike other East European cabbage rolls which are mainly hamburger with a small amount of rice). Cabbage leaves are steamed to make them soft and then the filling is added. The holubtsi are placed in a large pot, covered with tomato soup (or sauce) and baked. The word "holub" in Ukrainian means "dove," and holubtsi are in the shape of a dove.

Borscht is Ukrainian beet soup.

Kapusniak is cabbage soup made with fresh shredded cabbage, pork, onions, celery, and seasonings.

Kovbasa is smoked Ukrainian ham sausage.

Kapusta is baked fresh cabbage and sauerkraut with onions and seasoning.

Fried Perohe is a yeast dough, filled with potato and cheese and deep fried.
