Course Information:

Welcome to Forestry 2! We will dive deeper into the world of Forestry and Natural Resources including the exploration of careers, leadership, equipment and wood products and processing. This course is an second level course for the Forestry and Natural Resource program, and is a trimester long. There are a variety of opportunities to partake in the program FNRL and FFA activities, which will reinforce the course academics, build leadership capabilities and explore the scope of career and academic opportunities in our local industry.

Course Prerequisites: none 

(students need to completed two trimesters of Forestry 1 before advancing to Forestry 2)

Course Objectives:

At the end of this course students will:

• Identify and describe career opportunities in Forestry/Natural Resources
• Demonstrate various related career and leadership skills
• Describe diverse variables in forest management decisions and industry standards
• Illustrate Oregon’s diverse forest industry including history, culture, policies and skills
• Describe ecological concepts and principles, including human relationship to natural resources
• Develop skills in research, planning and preparation
• Demonstrate professionalism, industry skills and tool use relevant to careers and academics

Students in this course will develop skills and content knowledge aligned with the National AFNR standards, Oregon Skills Sets, Next Generation Science Standards and common core skills.

Expectations and Attendance:  

• Strong work ethic, and readiness to participate in class
• All people, students and teachers, will treat each other with respect
• All students will adhere to school policies, as outlined in the PHS handbook
• Students must come to class prepared and be in their seats on time
• Maintain safe practices in and around the classroom and laboratory at all time
• Attend class regularly, attendance is a student responsibility

Materials:

• A binder or folder to organize course materials
• Loose-leaf notebook paper or spiral notebook that fits in your binder
• Pen and/or pencil
• Google Classroom (Students will be given Usernames and Passwords on the first day of school)
• Readings will all be provided on Google Classroom

Attire:

Proper clothing should be safe and might get dirty on projects. Required clothing includes:

• Close toed shoes
• Long sleeve shirt
• Long pants (no shorts/skirts!)

Students will have access to a shared locker and will have time to change before and after projects. Safety equipment provided includes: safety glasses, ear plugs, hard hat and gloves. Students without proper attire will not participate in class activities, and will lose participation points for the day, along with an alternate assignment.

Assessment:    

Grades will be based on a point system and weighted based on the percentages below. The majority of student’s grade is based on work ethic and in class assignments.

(Work Ethic is defined as: being prepared, on time, effective teamwork, safety, positive attitude, staying on task throughout the period, following directions, respecting equipment and general professionalism/career ready skills and proper attire.)

        Assignment Breakdown:

• Formative (80%): Classwork/participation, Quizzes, Work Ethic, Openers/Binder
• Summative (20%): Tests/Projects

        Grading Scale:

A = 90 - 100%

B = 80 - 89%

C = 70 - 79%

D = 60 - 69%

Homework/Classwork Policy:

• Students will receive full credit on assignments that are on time and show a complete effort
• If absent, homework should be turned into the “turn in box” upon return, clearly marked at the top “Absent”.
• Late Work: Late work will be accepted up to the end of the unit, but will receive no more than half credit. Late work should be turned into the turn in box.
• Openers: Openers will be posted at the beginning of each class, and will be checked weekly and graded based on completion.  All openers must be complete at the time of checks for credit, regardless of absence.

Quiz and Test Make-Up and Retake:

• A deadline for retakes will be set by the teacher, following the test. After the deadline, NO retakes are allowed.
• If a student has an excused absence, the teacher will arrange deadlines with that student for make-up and retake tests, on a per student basis.
• If a student has an unexcused absence, then the student will be expected to adhere to the already set deadlines. The teacher will take into consideration the reason for absence.
• Make-ups/Retakes are available during office hours.

Make-Up Work:

• Make-Up work is the responsibility of the student, in regards to checking Google Classroom to identify missed work and complete assignments. Questions can be answered during office hours or after school.

Assignment Format:

All assignments should be in 12-point font, times new roman or arial, with citations and paper formatted to MLA formats. 10% will be deducted if these formats are not met for all assignments.

Classroom Policies:

This classroom is a learning community which will operate with respect for other students, staff, property and rules. The goal of this classroom is to have a fun, safe learning environment in which everyone can learn and participate freely.

• Cheating and Plagiarism - Zero Tolerance - will result in a zero for all students involved and immediate referral to administration – School Policy
• No leaving the class the first and last ten minutes of class. Use the restroom, fill waters, etc. between classes if possible.
• Restroom breaks - students may use the class bathroom outside of instruction time.
• Food and Drinks - only drinks with tightly closed, non-spill lids are allowed, Food will be allowed for a probationary period, and can be removed at any time by the teacher if it becomes a distraction or a mess.

• Food and Drinks WILL NOT be allowed during labs, in the shop, or on outside property

• Disruptive behaviors - will be addressed following restorative practices. Steps that could be taken to address misbehavior include:

• Conversations with student about impact, repairing harm, or future behavior
• Contact with parent/guardian
• Responsibility reflection written by the student
• Formal agreement made with the student
• Disciplinary referral

Tentative Schedule:

Below is the list of topics, and a guide to note major summative assessments that will be provided over the course. At the beginning of each unit, students will write in the due dates, to be as accurate as allowed by school schedules and is up to change per instructor needs. This syllabus is the be kept in the front of the student binder to serve as a guide for classroom expectations and unit timelines.
