Dear Members & Friends,                                                                                               June 2019

Please mark your calendars for our 2019 annual meeting which will be held on Tuesday, July 30 at 7:00 p.m. at the Shaw Hudson House in the connector between the house and the barn.  We are very fortunate to have Dennis Picard, retired director of the Storrowtown Village Museum in West Springfield, who will give a presentation on the history and significance of some of the tools in the Plainfield Historical Society’s collection. These include: hay knives, seed planters, a pressure cooker, broom machine, pod auger, gambrel stick.  In addition, for a contribution of $100 which includes membership in the Plainfield Historical Society, you can enjoy a dinner at 5:00 p.m. at the Shaw Hudson House with Dennis Picard, prior to his presentation.  The dinner is limited to the first 12 people who make a contribution.

This has been another active and productive year for the Plainfield Historical Society.  Our present botanical exhibit entitled “Plants on Paper” will be on display at the town library for the months of June and July.  This exhibit was inspired by an herbarium created by Samuel Francis Shaw in 1854 while he was a student at Williams College.  The herbarium, originally found in a bank vault in Philadelphia, was donated to the Plainfield Historical Society.

The members of the Plainfield Historical Society once again served a ham dinner at the town hall on Memorial Day.  The highlight of the dinner was the pie auction.  Pies, baked by Plainfield’s renowned pie makers, were auctioned off after the dinner to enthusiastic and competitive bidders.

Other activities throughout the year included: cataloging the society’s photo collection; an historic barn tour in October followed by fresh cider and doughnuts; a brochure describing the historical society was created for the welcome basket given to newcomers in Plainfield; work parties and repairs to the Shaw Hudson House; decorating the library at the Williams Cullen Bryant Homestead for Christmas.

The members of the Board of the Plainfield Historical Society have developed the following scale payment for yearly membership: Individual -$20; Family-$50; Friend - $100 +; Patron -$200+; Benefactor-$500+.  Send your contribution made out to the Plainfield Historical Society to Judith Williams, 525 West Main St., Plainfield, MA 01070.  Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely yours,

Judith Bryan Williams
