SODDY-DAISY, Tenn. -- The Bradley Central Bearettes held off East Hamilton, 52-45, for their ninth consecutive District 5 AAA tournament championship on Monday night at Soddy-Daisy High School.
East Hamilton (20-12) jumped out to a 5-0 lead just over a minute in the game on a pair of Madison Hayes free throws and a McKenna Hayes 3-pointer. The two teams traded baskets but the Bearettes were able to end the quarter on a 5-1 run to take a 16-15 lead after the first quarter.
The Lady Hurricanes scored the first points of the second to take their final lead of the night before Bradley (27-3) went on a run to begin to separate the score. Over the next three minutes, the Bearettes ripped off a 13-point run started by a pair of Cambree Mayo free throws. Mayo was able to find the bottom of the next twice more in the run scoring nine points in the second period to help Bradley take an eight-point lead into the half time break.
The Bearettes were able to add to their lead in the third as Hannah Lombard, Kaleigh Hughes, and Jamaryn Blair made four straight 3-pointers and stretched the lead to 15, the largest of the night, with 1:16 left in the quarter. East Hamilton was able to score one more bucket in the quarter to trim the lead to 13 heading into the final frame.
The fourth started with the two teams trading baskets but then East Hamilton used an 11-point run to slice the lead to three points with 1:10 remaining in the game on a Madison Hayes field goal, the last one of the night. With East Hamilton having to foul Blair and Lombard both hit a pair of free throws to stretch the lead back to seven with key defensive stops and the Bearettes were able to hang on for the 52-45 win.
Anna Walker paced the Bearette offense scoring 13 points, including her 700th career point. Mayo and Blair threw in 12 points each and Hughes had six with her pair of 3’s. Walker led the team with eight rebounds. Blair was able to pull down seven boards in the contest to go along with five assists and two steals.
Madison Hayes led all players with 18 points and 12 rebounds to finish out the double-double. McKenna Hayes was the next highest scoring 13 while Dezah Lacy recorded seven. Elizah Laboo was able to record six rebounds and Madison Hayes was able to complete her stat line with four assists, three steals, a block, and a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Bradley Central shot 34.1 percent (15-for-44) from the floor and 9-of-25 (36 percent) from distance. The Bearettes were 13-for-20 (65 percent) from the free throw line. Bradley was able to force 15 turnovers with seven steals and record 11 assists on 15 made field goals. The number one seed was able to outrebound their opponents 33-31 while having 12 on the offensive end of the floor for 12 second chance points.
East Hamilton was 16-of-45 (35.6 percent) overall and was a cold 3-for-13 (23.1) from behind the 3-point line. The Lady Hurricanes shot 71.4 percent (10-for-14) from the free throw line in the loss.
The Bearettes will be back in action on Friday as they take on White County in the Region 3 AAA quarterfinals. Tip-off has been set for 7 p.m.
