Because learning a second language offers a lifetime of opportunities it is therefore essential that any language experience becomes an enjoyable part of children’s life. We also believe that Modern Foreign Languages is about opening the children’s minds to other cultures and deepening their understanding of the world. We teach French in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 as a skill-based subject. This allows the children to develop their use of vocabulary through conversation and oral activities and become familiar with the language, writing and reading. We encourage children to become confident and enthusiastic language learners who in time will have their talents recognised by providing them with a skill for life.

We use the award-winning ‘Le Jolie Ronde’ scheme of work because we believe that children not only need to learn a second language, but also learn and understand the everyday realities of the country and the culture they are studying.  The scheme offers weekly lessons which are combined with fun and exciting games, story-telling, songs and activities.

By the end of Key Stage 2, children are able to listen to the spoken language of French and show understanding by joining in or engaging in conversation and expressing their own opinions. They will learn and become more confident in developing accurate pronunciation and intonation and read aloud using familiar words and phrases.
