EXPERT SPEAKERS

Dr. Laura Rosella

Dr. Laura Rosella is an adjunct scientist with Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences, an assistant professor at the Dalla Lana School of Public Health, an associate scientist of Public Health Ontario, and a member of the Banting & Best Diabetes Center. She is CIHR Canada Research Chair in Population Health Analytics, and this year was awarded the Brian MacMahon Early Career Epidemiologist Award and the prestigious Bill Silverman Prize in conjunction with Dr. David Henry. Previously, she was awarded the Robin Badgley Teaching Award from the Dalla Lana School of Public Health.

Dr. Richard Birtwhistle

Dr. Richard Birtwhistle, MD,MSc, CCFP, FCFP is a family physician and clinical epidemiologist. He is a Professor of Family Medicine and Public Health Sciences and the Walter Wylie Rosser Chair in Family Medicine Research at Queen’s University. He is the past Vice Chair of the Canadian Task Force on Preventive Health Care. Since 2008 he has been the principal investigator and is the Chair for the Canadian Primary Care Sentinel Surveillance Network (CPCSSN). He also served as the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Medical Education in the School of Medicine at Queen’s from 1996-2004. His primary research interests include use of electronic medical records for research, chronic disease management, and the evaluation of primary care models.

Dr. Stan Matwin

Dr. Stan Matwin is the Director of the Institute for Big Data Analytics at Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia, Canada, and a Professor and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) at the Faculty of Computer Science. He is also a Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Ottawa, and a State Professor at the Institute for Computer Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences. Dr. Matwin holds the titles of Fellow of the European Coordinating Committee on AI, and Fellow of the Canadian AI Association (CAIAC). In 2017 he was elected to serve on the Board of Directors of CS-Can/Info Can, an organization serving as a focal point for Computer Science research and education in Canada. Internationally recognized for his work in text mining, applications of machine learning, and data privacy, he is a member of the Editorial Boards of leading journals in machine learning and data mining. Dr. Matwin was the General Chair of KDD 2017 in Halifax, Canada. He has authored and co-authored more than 250 refereed papers, and supervised of more than 50 graduate students. Dr. Matwin has extensive experience and interest in innovation and technology transfer.

Dr. Vijay Mago

Dr. Vijay Mago is an Associate Professor in the Department of Computer Science at Lakehead University, where he teaches and conducts research in areas including big data analytics, machine learning, natural language processing, artificial intelligence, medical decision making and Bayesian intelligence. Dr. Mago received his Ph.D. in Computer Science from Panjab University, India in 2010. In 2011 he joined the Modelling of Complex Social Systems program at the IRMACS Centre of Simon Fraser University before moving on to stints at University of Memphis and Troy University. He has served on the program committees of many international conferences and workshops. His research lab has attracted funding from NSERC, SSHRC, MITACS, ONCAT and New York based IT industry. Recently in 2017, he joined Technical Investment Strategy Advisory Committee Meeting for Compute Ontario. Dr. Mago has published extensively on new methodologies based on soft computing and artificial intelligent techniques to tackle complex systemic problems such as homelessness, obesity, and crime. He currently serves as an associate editor for BMC Medical Informatics and Decision Making and as co-editor for the Journal of Intelligent Systems.
