Worshipped as a deity by the ogres of the Blade's Edge Mountains, Great father to the Gronn, Gruul the Dragonkiller earned his name by slaying countless Black Dragon guardians and impaling them on spikes throughout his homeland. Gruul's unparalleled strength and experience in battle would pose a serious threat if he ever chose to attack Horde or Alliance forces in Outland- so a band of adventures set forth to destroy him once and forall. This would be no easy task ... Gruul may look like nothing but a cruel brute, but the truth is he possesses uncanny intelligence as well as strength.
Once Gruul was defeated the adventures believed the Dragonkiller was finally vanquished… only to find that in the alternate universe of Draenor Gruul has been subjugated and served as laborer for the Iron Horde. Adventures are greeted with this chilling note when entering the Blackrock Foundry…
“Garrosh knew that the surest path to breaking the gronn lay in subjugating their great father, Gruul. Known in another time as the Dragonkiller, here Gruul has been reduced to the role of menial laborer. In a cruel mockery of the Shattered Hand's warrior tradition, his hand has been replaced with a hook to enable him to more easily haul pallets of fuel to the furnace."
Gruul is the worst kind of foe… not only intelligent, but also unbelievable strength and smashing attacks that leave most that challenge him outmatched.
Trait- “DPS Check”
It is commonly said that in the Blackrock Foundry Gruul is a DPS check- meaning that if he isn't defeated before he enrages- your group might need to have more DPS to defeat him and the entire raid. In the nexus I wanted to represent this in some way- this trait is what I came up with. With this trait when Gruul is below 15% health he will take 50% less damage. This can be talented into later in the game to allow Gruul to deal extra damage to enemies while below 15% health.
Mount- No Mount- Gruul uses his hook to grab the earth and pull himself forward faster- trotting across the battlefield while “mounted”
Q- “Inferno Slice”
Gruul slashes forward with the cleaving attack from his hook that deals damage to all enemies in a cone in front of him. All enemies that are hit with this will receive a debuff called “Inferno Strike” and will take increased damage from Inferno Slice while this debuff is active. The increased damage debuff doesn't stack with a larger % of damage- but it does stack the amount of time the player will take increased damage from Inferno Slice. If players are hit with Inferno Slice they will want to leave the area until the debuff falls off or face increased damage from the next time Gruul uses this ability.
W- “Petrifying Slam”
Gruul selects an enemy hero and slams them, knocking them back beginning the process of petrification. Petrification takes a short amount of time, but once petrified the player will turn to stone and be stuck in place for a short amount of time. Heroes can be released from this petrification if they are attacked by a friendly hero.
Gruul lets out a scream that shatters (explodes) all petrified players and deals AoE damage to other enemy heroes in the area.
Heroic 1- “Destructive Rampage”
Gruul begins to smash the ground quickly a total of 5 times. These smashes deal damage to all enemy players in a circle around Gruul as well as pushes them back from him. (away from the circle roughly the size of Dva bunny hop.)
Heroic 2- “Puny God”
Gruul picks up a target enemy hero in range and smashes them into the ground back and forth for a total of 4 smashes dealing damage with each smash. At the end of the 4th smash the target enemy hero is released but will be petrified after a short amount of time.
Specialty Skin: “Space Hulk Gruul” OR “Mr Hyde Gruul” from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.
Dance: Jump Hook (Gruul grabs his hook with his off cand and jumps rope with his long arms)
Off Tank/Damage Bruiser
High health, low damage off tank talents, moderate damage bruiser talents
Gruul’s model is large but will need to be small enough to allow for growth stacks, within reason
Many talents can modify abilities with either more types of damage, or non stun cc effects
Gruul’s primary attack is a fist swing
Higher dmg, lower speed AA
Gruul has no mount, but instead slowly picks up speed as he walks, reaching X% speed increase after X time. Once Gruul has passed a certain speed threshold, he now pushes aside units in his way, though does no damage. Gruuls movement is not immediately stopped by damage like a normal mount, but his speed is decreased progressively down to normal when he takes enemy auto attacks.
Gruul slams his fists into the ground, doing damage to all enemies in an area around him.
Gruul throws a large boulder to a target location, dealing damage in the area and knocking back targets a short distance.
E: “Cave In”
Gruul targets a rectangular area on the ground that will “cave in” for 5 seconds. Every second boulders will spawn above enemies in the area, then drop a short time after doing damage to anything caught in the radius of the boulder.
Gruul increases in size, increasing health and damage dealt by X%. Gruul can increase in size up to 5 times. Gruul will automatically increase in size every X seconds but will also increase in size when he kills enemy heroes. All size growth is lost on death. Activate Growth to enrage Gruul, causing all basic attacks to cleave for a short time.
Gruul targets a large area putting down a slowing field for 4 seconds that slows enemy heroes by 20%. This slow will stack slowly while the enemies remain in the area. If the enemy is still in the area and has retained the slow effect for at least 2 seconds, on expiration they will turn to stone, becoming stunned for 1.5 seconds. Gruul can reactivate Shatter during its duration to remove the slow and deal damage based on the percentage of slow that Shatter built up to.
