Counselor’s Corner

9/16/2019

Dear Families,

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself! My name is Becky Kik and I am the K-5 Elementary School Counselor at Cherry Street Intermediate and Rapid City Elementary School.

My passion for school counseling began during my time as a student at Gustavus Adolphus College in Minnesota where I received my Elementary Education K-6 Teaching Certificate. I student taught 5/6th grade in Australia and then I went to Northern Michigan University where I earned my Masters in School Guidance and Counseling K-12. I am originally from Wisconsin where I was a middle school counselor for three years and then I moved to Kalkaska in 2004 and became the middle school counselor for 11 years.  I have currently been counseling at the elementary level and what I love most about this age is the genuine curiosity students have in their learning and the world around them.

As a School Counselor, I have the opportunity for early intervention support that can have a lifetime positive impact on a child. My primary responsibility is to promote the academic and social/emotional development of all students.  I will be meeting with students individually and in small groups, meeting with parents, collaborating with teachers and staff, and consulting with community organizations to benefit and meet the needs of all our students.

I am not a “fixer.” Students don’t come to me because there is something wrong with them, they come about to talk about the problems they are experiencing in their lives. Everyone experiences problems from time to time, and that is what we work on together. No child should ever feel embarrassed about visiting the school counselor. If you ever have any questions or concerns, or do not wish to have your child participate in these school counseling services, please do not hesitate to call 231-258-9146 (Cherry Street), 231-331-6121 (Rapid City) or email me (bkik@kpschools.com) at any time.

I am so excited to work with your children and get to know you throughout the school year!

All the best,

Becky Kik
