Bonne Terre Memorial Library Collection Development Policy
Purpose of the Policy
The Bonne Terre Memorial Library has adopted the following Collection Development Policy to guide librarians and staff and to inform the public about the principles upon which library collections are developed and maintained. The policy provides information about the library and the community, the scope of the collection, the library's goals for providing information, and specific practices for selecting and maintaining books and other library materials.
The Mission Statement of the Bonne Terre Memorial Library guides the Library staff in selection of materials.
"The mission of the Bonne Terre Memorial Library is to provide access to informational, educational, cultural, and recreational library materials and services in a variety of formats and technologies; to be responsive to the public library needs of the community, and to uphold the public's freedom of access to information. Community needs drive our services, and we take a personal interest in ensuring that they are delivered in a welcoming, convenient, and responsive manner."
The Bonne Terre Memorial Library acquires and makes available materials that inform, educate, entertain, and enrich individuals within the City of Bonne Terre and surrounding area. The library provides, within its financial limitations, a general collection of reliable materials embracing broad areas of knowledge. Included are works of enduring value and timely materials on current issues. Within the framework of these broad objectives, selection is based on community demographics and evidence of areas of interest. Impartiality and judicious selection will be exercised in all materials acquisitions practices.
Collections are developed to meet the objectives of public library serv Because the public library serves a community embracing a wide range of ages, ethnic backgrounds, educational levels and interests, the Library may fulfill a number of roles in the community. After considering library and materials use, current and past strengths of the library, local demographic trends, citizen expectation as expressed in surveys, other library resources in the area and current resources of the library, the Bonne Terre Memorial Library has selected the following roles to emphasize:
Primary: CURRENT TOPICS AND TITLES--We help to fulfill our public's appetite for information about popular cultural and social trends and their desire for satisfying recreational experiences.
LIFELONG LEARNING--We help address our public's desire for self-directed personal growth and development opportunities.
Secondary: GENERAL INFORMATION--We help to meet our public's need for information and answers to questions on a broad array of topics related to work, school and personal life.
PUBLIC ACCESS COMPUTERS--In the age of growing dependence on computer access, we help to provide that access for those who do not have home computers.
BUSINESS AND CAREER INFORMATION–We address our public's need for information related to business, careers, work, entrepreneurship, personal finances and obtaining employment.
Goals of the Bonne Terre Memorial Library
To provide equal and uncensored access to sources of knowledge, information, programs, and services that are responsive to the needs of the community.
• To recognize and manage change in a positive way and use technology to maximum advantage. To provide ethical, fiscally responsible stewardship of public resources, to actively promote the use of library services through a planned program of activities aimed at increasing public awareness of these services, and to encourage and assist individuals to obtain the fullest benefit from their use. To cooperate with other libraries, schools, and community agencies, and groups in the delivery service.
• To provide current and responsive collections in a variety of formats that reflect the diversity of recorded thought and expression and the unique interests, needs, and special characteristics of Bonne Terre. To provide programs that assist in literacy and lifelong learning for citizens of all ages. To strive to provide a balance of viewpoints on all subjects in its collection.
