Eligibility criteria
The Sponsor encourages broad participation and applications from global organisations or individuals who:
- Have a local partner available to help validate with field-based insight and data.
- Experience using GeoSpatial data and Esri software or similar either themselves or within the organisation’s partnerships.
- Have adequate resources and expertise to conduct research and development activities
- Willing to make data available in line with the procedures and principles
- Is an individual, research institution and/or not-for-profit organisation. Commercial for-profit companies will not be awarded.
Terms and Conditions
The following terms and conditions shall apply to the Satellites for Biodiversity Award Round 2 opportunity, being conducted by Connected Conservation Foundation and Airbus Foundation, scheduled to run between Monday 02 October, 2023 and closes Friday 15 December, 2023. By submitting an entry for consideration, the submitting individual or organisation agrees to the following Terms & Conditions.
Winning Participants will be awarded:
- Winning Participants will receive a maximum of $6,000 USD (VAT included), based on the budget that was included in the submitted proposal. Receipt of the funds will be contingent on the Winner’s execution of a simple grant agreement with CCF, specifying the funds to be provided and requiring collaboration with participating parties as set out in the Terms & Conditions.
- A tasking budget to use Pléiades Neo 30cm (up to 1,000km2) and Pléiades 50cm Data (up to 2,000km2). These Km2 ranges are guidelines and proposals over this will still be considered.
- Winning participants will also be able to access the Airbus Archive Library or SPOT imagery on request
- Applications close at 23.59 on Friday 15 December 2023, with winners aimed to be announced in early March 2024.
- The grant will also require that each Winner provides a written progress report at two reasonable intervals within the duration of one year from date of award.
- The application as submitted and implemented does not and will not violate any applicable laws for the target country or applicant's residence.
Data availability and technical support:
- Winners will need to accept the Image User License required to use satellite imagery products before a dedicated One Atlas account is set up for each winner.
- The operation of the satellites and the transmission of certain satellite imagery are subject to the laws in France, Germany and Spain, depending on the satellites and to the terms of a Government operating license. The Winners will therefore have to accept that it shall be required to comply with all of such provisions of such laws and regulations, which may include satellite imagery reception restrictions and limitation on data distribution.
- The Winners will also need to accept that Airbus products and services shall not be exported to any country which is the subject of commercial, economic or financial restrictions pursuant to any applicable Sanctions and Export Control Laws nor used by any Sanctioned Person.
- CCF will pre-approval satellite archive requests as well as tasking acquisition plans before capture, to ensure new requests meet the agreed tasking budget allocation, requested in the application and agreed in grant documentation.
- Award sponsors, CCF and Airbus Technical Support, will support winners in their access to the imagery.
- Processing of images will be the responsibility of the winning applicants.
- If the applicant proposes development or refinement of AI software derived from the image, this will remain the property of the applying entity. Any data generated or information learned from the application of AI to the imagery for the target setting will remain the property of the applicant.
- Reporting on the outcomes from application of the grant will be expected. Where outcomes or insight information is sensitive, e.g. locations of endangered species, applicants can request for any sensitive information not to be disclosed and this will be documented and respected by all collaborating parties.
Communications
- As a condition of participation in the grant, each winner will allow CCF and Airbus Foundation and Airbus Defence and Space license to use, publish, disclose and publicly display the project information and supply screen grabs or exported rasters of captured imagery for use in communications by Airbus Foundation and CCF;
- If a particular image is sensitive or has ethical concerns, this will be raised ahead of capture.
- Imagery and outcomes of the research and application will be usable by CCF and Airbus Foundation in communications. Winners agree to share learnings in a collaborative blog post at the end of their project. Winners will provide contributions to a written blog with short updates on project development and outcomes
- The winners are not allowed to use the trademarks of CCF and Airbus Foundation without prior written consent.
Indemnification
By participating in the award, the applicant agrees:
- To release and hold harmless CCF and Airbus Foundation and their respective affiliates, contractors, subcontractors, partners and any other organizations involved in the administration of the award, from and against any and all liability, losses, damages, costs, expenses, and claims of any kind arising out of or relating to participation in the award.
CCF and Airbus Foundation have the right to end, interrupt, or change the award without prior notifications and to amend the Terms & Conditions and awards at any time. Such actions shall not entitle Participants to any financial compensation.
