Dear Future 3rd Grade Parents:

Welcome to summer!  After a year of hard work, your child is leaving as a better reader, writer and math student.  Research has shown that students who read during the summer months maintain the gains that they have made during the school year. This summer packet was put together to help you and your child do some fun activities and help keep these skills on track.  Attached you will find an activity calendar for the summer months.  Each week your child will find a reading, writing, math, religion and physical activity.  You will also find the summer reading information for your child.

In order to keep your child active, I am asking that you and your child choose at least 3 activities per week to complete.  When the task is finished, simply initial in the box.   Most of the activities require no materials; however, some you may need an item or two.  You can always complete an activity on the back of the calendar or a separate piece of paper.  Send in all the work on the first day of school.

Reading should be a fun and engaging activity for your child.  Summer reading will give each child the option to read 2 books of their choosing.  Help him/her to choose a book they want to read and are excited about finishing.  If you and your child are struggling to find a book, review the attached list.  My only request is that the 2 books must be chapter books with at least 40 pages.  In this packet, you will find 2 book reports with an envelope to return them to me.  Simply complete both  and drop them in the mail.  After I get both from your child, they will receive something from me.

While it may seem like work, this packet is meant to maintain skills while having fun!  Please try to encourage your child to complete as many activities as possible.  I have also attached a list of some educational websites for those rainy days with nothing to do!

As always, please let me know if you have any issues or concerns!  Happy Summer!
