After many interactions within the city the trio finally made their way out of Milos.  They exited through a different entrance, which led out into more desert.  The different time however is that there was a road to follow this time.  I was light grey and appeared to be well kept.

The road led northwest, simultaneously meeting Mareson’s wish to explore more of Whipswires, and Oliver’s wish of heading north in an attempt to find his caravan at Des Armes.  Squire had his desires as well, but at this point he was happy to come along for the ride.  He trusted his two older friends’ judgement anyway.

“Do you know where this road might lead?”  Oliver asked.

“Meh, I dunno.”  Mareson was acting testy as usual.  “You should’ve asked before we left.”

“Um, I’m sorry.”  At least they were able to follow a road this time.  And the thing about roads is that they have to lead somewhere.  So as long as they followed it at least they wouldn’t get lost.  “Hey, what’s that?”  Oliver suddenly asked.

“Huh?”  Mareson looked down the road.  “Oh no.”  He murmured as he saw what it was.

“There’s a sign in the middle of the road.”

Down the street a bit was what appeared to be a yield sign, fixed in the middle of the road.  “That thing is a monster.”

        “Huh?”

        “A wackless.”

Oliver thought for a moment.  “You’ve used that word before.”

“Yeah, they’re objects turned into monsters.”

The three of them ran up to the obstruction.  Sure enough, it was exactly what it appeared to be.  A tall yield sign that was fixated in the middle of the street.  “Don’t they usually put these things on the side of the road?”  Oliver questioned.  “Wait, you two probably wouldn’t know that.”

        “Like I said, that’s a wackless.”

        “But it’s so motionless.”

“It has to have walked here though.”  He pointed downwards.  “Look at it’s base.”

Oliver looked towards the ground.  The end of the sign split near the end, and looked like legs.  They were close together and not that noticeable.  “Oh.”

Mareson ran up to it.  Honestly, he forgot how he and Squire defeated it beforehand.  But Oliver being around was bound to make that task easier this time.  “Okay, ready?”  He said.

“It’s just standing there.  Should we really bother it?”

“I mean, we should always kill monste-”  One of the legs of the sign flew up and kicked Mareson in the chin.  He flew back, landing several meters away.

“Mareson!”  Oliver yelled.  He ran over to Mareson, but was cut off when the sign stomped in from of him.  He jumped back, and swung his sleeves downwards, casting something on the monster.

The ground beneath the yield sign lit up in a square pattern.  It glew a faint, ominous white.  The sign attempted to step out of it but was stopped when it smashed against the side of the light.  It was as if an invisible wall erected from the edges of the squares.  It couldn’t escape.

Oliver was about to run over to Mareson again but he managed to get up on his own.  The zebra readied his weapon and pointed it at the monster.  He couldn’t cast anything.  He remember from the last encounter like this that his magic simply flared off its metal.

But then the unexpected happened.  The light beneath the monster that was trapping it became more intense.  And then shards of light began to emit from the ground.  They began cutting at the sign, causing scratches at the paint at its front.

Mareson saw this as his opportunity.  He lunged forward into the spot of light.  “Wait, no!”  Oliver yelled.  Whatever magic was holding the sign in place it appeared to be only one-way as he crashed on through, shattering the light and tackling the sign down to the ground.  He then began stabbing at it repeatedly with his javelin, holding it backhanded like a knifewielder.

“Mareson!  I had that!”  Oliver yelled again.  Mareson ignored him as he stabbed it one final time, striking some kind of nerve as it twitched and shortly afterwards fell lifeless.

        “Ehheh, sorry.”  Mareson said.

“My magic is very delicate.  It works well, but it’s best not to interrupt it like that.”

Squire walked up beside him.  “That looked cool, whatever it was.”

“Thanks.  That one was called Spotlight Square.”

Mareson scoffed and looked over at him.  “So that’s your light magic?”

“Yeah.  I feel my magic is pretty average, but I can do some cool things.”

“Heh, cool.”  His tone was dismissive.

Regardless, Oliver walked up to the monster.  Now that it wasn’t moving it just looked like a normal sign that was pulled out of the ground and vandalised.  Well, aside from the split in the middle for its legs.  “So this is a wackless?”

        “They’re interesting, aren’t they?”

Oliver seemed unsure.  “It’s kind of freaky.”

“Heh, I guess you could call it that.  ‘Kinda freaky’.”

“I mean, I’ve never seen one before.”

        “They’re kinda everywhere.”

        “They seem... intrusive.”

        “Intrusive?”

“Like, they’re not suppose to be here.  They’re certainly not natural.  It’s almost as if some evil magic is bringing them to life.  Especially if they’re as common as you say they are.”

“I think they’re new here... so maybe?”

“Huh.”  He thought to himself.  “So this is what we’re going to have to deal with.”  He then smiled awkwardly.  “Yeah, let’s do this.”

They then decided to continue on down the road.  It may be treacherous, but it was bound to lead somewhere eventually.
