Program Transfer Goals

  1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them.
  2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively.
  3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others.
  4. Model with mathematics.
  5. Use appropriate tools strategically.
  6. Attend to precision.

  8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning.

Fall Semester

Unit Name

Unit Focus

Unit 1: Number and Operation

In this unit, students will focus on the real number system.  Students will be able to classify and order numbers of any form, and solve problems involving real numbers.  Students will consider the following questions:

  • What are the characteristics of the real number system?
  • How are rational and irrational numbers different from each other?

Unit 2: Linear Relationships

In this unit, students will understand that a table, an equation, and a graph can communicate the same information. Students will continue to bridge the gap between linearity and proportionality and explore the similarities and differences. Students will consider the following questions:

  • What are the characteristics of a proportional or non-proportional relationship?
  • When is one representation more useful than another?

Unit 3: Data and Statistics

In this unit, students will focus on data analysis.  Students will be able to collect data and create a scatterplot to make predictions and solve problems.  Students will consider the following questions:

  • How does the type of display influence the interpretation of data?
  • What makes a prediction or conclusion reasonable/reliable?

Unit 4: Algebraic Relationships

In this unit, students will focus on linear relationships and how they can offer us pathways to solve everyday problems.  Students will be able to represent linear relationships numerically, graphically, verbally, and symbolically.  Students will consider the following questions:

  • What makes a solution reasonable?
  • How does the relationship between word problems and equations enhance our ability to solve problems?

Spring Semester

Unit Name

Unit Focus

Unit 5: Geometric Relationships

In this unit, students will focus on geometric relationships in three-dimensional figures.  Students will be able to solve problems involving the volume and surface area of three-dimensional figures.  Students will consider the following questions:

  • When is it appropriate to use estimation and/or approximation?
  • How can you model this situation using mathematics?
  • What is another real-world situation for which you could apply the same mathematical model?

Unit 6: Personal Financial Literacy

In this unit, students will focus on personal financial literacy.  Students will understand the positive and negative future impact of financial decisions.  Students will consider the following questions:

  • What types of credit can be useful?
  • When is compounding interest better than simple interest and why?
  • How will financial decisions I make now impact my future?
  • What factors should be considered when choosing a form of financial assistance?
