About the program
What are the Health research teams looking for in applicants?
We are looking for people who have a background in healthcare and want to learn to conduct machine learning research in collaboration with our researchers. You may have research experience in another field (e.g., a medical specialty, epidemiology, healthcare delivery science, genomics, clinical informatics, bioinformatics, etc.) and want to apply machine learning to this area. Of course, already having machine learning research experience is great.
Your application should show evidence of a background in healthcare (e.g., experience as a physician, nurse, epidemiologist, healthcare delivery scientist, informatician, pharmacist, etc.), a strong interest in the field of machine learning in healthcare, evidence of research productivity (including peer-reviewed publications) and proficiency in programming. The latter could be demonstrated through peer-reviewed publications, masters- or doctoral-level coursework involving programming, notable performance in competitions, links to an open-source project that demonstrates programming, mathematical ability, or implementations of one or more (even slightly) novel learning algorithms, including an explanation for what makes it novel.
What are the dates of the residency?
The Google AI Residency will start in the summer of 2020 and run for a minimum of 12 months, with an option to extend to 18 months for some. The exact start date is still being determined. AI Residency (Health) Residents will start together as a cohort.
In which office location(s) will this program be offered? How do I get assigned to a location?
The Google AI Residency Program (Healthc) is based in Palo Alto, California and London, England. Your location will be based on research interest and availability.
What is the difference between this and the general AI Residency role?
Both opportunities are the same in that participants will collaborate with researchers and engineers in the field of machine learning. The AI Residency Program (Health) is specifically geared towards those with a healthcare background. If you do not qualify for this healthcare-oriented program based on the minimum qualification, please wait to apply to the general AI Residency. You can track the application timeline at g.co/airesidency.
Will there be a salary? What if I don’t live close to Mountain View or London - will Google help me relocate?
Yes, all residents will be paid a competitive base salary and completion bonus. If you need to relocate for the residency, Google will also provide a relocation bonus to assist you in the move to your residency location.
What is the difference between this program and an internship at Google?
The Residency program is a 12-18 month long program with our Google Health group, as opposed to an internship which usually lasts 3-6 months. Residents are on-boarded into the program as full time employees for a fixed term of 12-18 months with full access to Google tools and infrastructure. Residents also have the flexibility of choosing mentors and the types of projects to work on, as opposed to internships where projects and mentors have been pre-selected.
What is the program structure like?
Residents will spend the first two weeks of the program going through the Google Orientation sessions interlaced with introductory deep learning classes, and sessions introducing them to their specific domains. In the 3rd week, residents will begin working on an introductory project to be completed within three weeks, during which longer term project and mentor assignments will take place in tandem.
What are my career possibilities after finishing the residency program?
At the end of the program, residents may be eligible for a full time conversion at Google, or be able to apply their new knowledge to future healthcare research / clinical practice. While there may be an opportunity to join Google full time, this will be dependent on hiring needs and individual performance. We do not guarantee full time employment as a participant in this program
How are projects and mentors assigned to residents?
Project and mentor assignment will take place a few weeks after the program kicks off. This will give residents the opportunity to interact with various team members and learn more about what work the research teams are passionate about.
Projects chosen should ideally be a combination of short term and longer term projects. When choosing projects, residents will have the flexibility to select from a list of pre-proposed projects or propose their own ideas.
Mentors will be assigned based on the projects a resident decides to undertake. Each resident will have the opportunity to work with more than one mentor at a time, and mentors will rotate depending on the project lifecycle.
