Wyckoff Summer Academies 2022

Learning continues this July! Wyckoff Summer Academies will now be offered as an in-person experience for all Wyckoff School district students. Come and explore engaging, creative, and academic classes that motivate and inspire students to continue learning in a fun environment.

How Does it Work?

The Wyckoff Summer Academies is a program designed for children entering Kindergarten through 8th grade. Please select preferences based on your child’s grade in September 2022.  

Our goal is to accommodate as many families as possible. The following rules/criteria will be adhered to when creating schedules.

Who Teaches the Classes?

Classes are taught by certified teachers. Each teacher has designed classes based on his/her individual creativity, special interests, talent, and abilities.

Who Can Register?

Any student enrolled in the Wyckoff School District, or a student entering Kindergarten to 8th grade can register for classes.  Students entering 8th grade, current 8th grade, and former EMS students may apply to be volunteer counselors.

 

When will schedules be shared?

Families will receive Wyckoff Summer Academies class schedules with details for students the week of April 1st. 

Daily Schedule:

Grades K - 2

Cancellation Policy:  Once schedules are finalized and shared, parents will be notified and have two weeks to pay the non-refundable registration fee and secure spots for the summer.

What Student Information is Needed?

Additional information will be collected upon confirmation of schedules. If your child has an order for epinephrine or needs any medications during the summer program, please provide the following on July 5, 2022.

1.) Medication in its original container

2.) Written orders from your healthcare provider

3.) Your written permission to administer medication. In order to maintain your child’s health and safety, allergy and/or medical concerns may be shared with pertinent staff.

What Safety Protocols will be in Place?

What about payment?  Payment will be collected in April, once schedules are shared.

A one time non-refundable registration fee of $25 per student for the program.  This registration fee covers both sessions. There are no additional payments.

Class Offerings

Select your student’s grade level for September 2022 

Please note that not all classes listed below will run. Class schedules will be created based on interest (classes with low requests will not run) and teacher availability. Therefore, each student is asked to select up to 14 options depending on the grade level. This will allow for the creation of schedules for both sessions (up to eight classes) if desired, and multiple options per student.  Classes listed in multiple grade levels may be offered together or as separate classes by grade levels depending on interest.

Three new classes created during scheduling to meet the needs of many students:

Breakout & Challenges 

The teacher will create fun engaging activities including online breakout challenges, physical breakout challenges, and other brain teasing challenges. Students will participate in our own “Amazing Race” style class!  

Games Inside & Out 

A combination of classic board games and move it. Students will work with the teacher to determine different games they are passionate about participating in during the class. From Checkers, Connect4, Word Searches, 7-Up to Kick Ball, Basketball, Tag, and more! All students will have a great time in this class.

Yoga & Sports 

A combination of yoga and athletic activities. Students will get stretching and moving with this class.


Kindergarten

Blueprint Builders (SEL/STEM)

Children will learn to create plans and implement their designs through all types of block play including wooden blocks, legos, Keva, K’nex, and more. They will use their reading, writing, and math skills to build skyscrapers, hotels, airports, and/or other structures that spark student interest! Not only will your child enjoy the experience of building, but also be immersed in purposeful play, which influences communication and social skills.

Crafts from Around the World (Art/Social Studies)

Join us as we dive into different cultures from around the world by exploring the art that they create. Students will read books together from different countries around the globe.  They will make their own art-creations while we learn about the history and geography of the world.

Move It (Fitness)

Let’s get outside and move! Students will participate in organized group games including tag, duck-duck-goose, and many more!

Number Munchers (Math)

Students will explore numbers and early math skills together. Whether counting editable items and creating graphs, rolling dice, or math games this class is sure to add up to fun!

Pint-Sized Picassos (Art/History)

Focuses on a different artist each day.  Students will read a story or watch a short video about the artist before creating a work of art inspired by their style or techniques.

Picture Books are Magic (LAL)

Enjoy the magic of a picture book each day. After listening to a read-aloud of a wonderful picture book, a related activity or craft will be created. Students can make a Play-Doh or clay sculpture of a scene from the book, create a watercolor painting of the setting, design a bookmark with the character in mind, draw a new cover for the book, or simply act out the story with friends. The list is endless!

Reading, Movement, and Stories (SEL/LAL/Math/STEM)

Runs for two periods 8:20 - 10:05 or 10:35 - 12:20

This is a perfect opportunity to get ready for kindergarten! Reading, singing, moving, exploring, and playing, Oh My!  Our diverse adventures will engage children to share and learn things about themselves, their families, and others. We will read stories and participate in fun activities, songs and games.

Revving up for Reading (LAL)

Your incoming kindergartener will begin to learn more about letters and sounds to help with early reading skills while creating crafts and having fun with movement. Creativity and skilled instruction will be used to engage your child as they work with a variety of materials to learn proper letter formation, improved pencil grip, spacing, and sizing while engaging in a multitude of activities to help strengthen fine motor skills. 

Safety Town (SEL)

Runs for two periods 8:20 -10:05

Students will be introduced to safety awareness and preventative procedures. Community first responders including members of the police, fire, and the emergency medical service will visit during each session with their emergency vehicles to educate the students on safety. Students will also practice "driving" through their own town while engaging in specific safety lessons. Students are not separated by elementary schools.

Science Experiments (Science)

Science is all around us! Students will focus on different experiments or topics.   They will learn the basics of the scientific method and science in a fun and accessible way!

STEM Challenges (STEM)

Do you like to be creative and build awesome objects? Then join us in this STEM challenge class! Each student will use the materials to make an object that will solve a problem. Each day will bring a new challenge for every student.

Tiniest Dancers and Singers (Music)

Work on your favorite songs and dances in this awesome class! Students will pick their own songs, and learn fun dances, culminating in an outdoor performance for their friends and family members!

Yoga (Fitness)

Come and enjoy a fun-filled yoga and literacy class this summer. Students will get to read stories with themes related to balance, flexibility, mindfulness, imagination, focus, listening, and play with the support of the teacher. Students should bring their own yoga mat or towel to practice on and wear comfortable, gym clothes to practice.


First & Second Grade

Create Cool Contraptions (Music/STEM)

Save those cardboard tubes and boxes - we are going to be using them to make everything from Rube Goldberg contraptions to beautiful music! We will be employing a makerspace mindset, using found items such as rubber bands, jars, boxes, beans, beads, tubes, and straws to make a variety of musical instruments and contraptions.

HandsOn Math Games (Math)

Are you looking for a fun, hands-on math experience for your child? Look no further. Students will manipulate math through games. Together we will reinforce basic math concepts to create exciting experiences such as playing card games, puzzles, and games like magic squares, math riddles, composing shapes out of pattern blocks, and much more! It’s math mania! In this class, students will continue to develop their number sense and problem-solving skills through puzzles and brain teasers.

Let’s Make Music (Music)

Come PLAY! We can build musical instruments, and create lively ensemble music. When we play them together, we can create a song! We will be learning some music basics and performing together to play some favorite songs, as well as compose a few of our own. We are going to have a blast dancing and making music together.

Literacy Workshop (LAL)

This class will offer explicit instruction in reading, writing, and word study that is balanced with opportunities for guided and independent practice. Students will work on skills and strategies for comprehension, word solving, vocabulary development, and fluency. Students will also follow the steps of the writing process and focus on language conventions, including grammar, as they study and write authentic writing pieces.

Move It (Fitness)

In this class, your child will interact and play with peers as they learn and engage in the rules and fun of classic and new games they could play at recess such as freeze tag, capture the flag, red light green light, gaga pit, four square, and more!

Students can draw a comic strip and retell the story, write song lyrics for the theme of the book, design a bookmark highlighting the setting, write letters to the author or the characters, lift a beautiful line and doodle, or simply create a new cover and title. 3D Printing Design (STEM)

Check out the exciting world of 3D printing! Students in the class will learn to create 3D designs on the computer.  There may be a chance to even make them come to life through 3D printing.

Avengers Mania (LAL)

A creative look into the Avengers characters and their backgrounds. Students will learn about specific heroes and their characteristics. Students will compare characters and debate their strengths and weaknesses in real-world scenarios.

Beading Creations (Art)

Do you enjoy being creative? Then this class is for you! Come learn how to make and design your own bead creations, such as bead hearts, snakes, lizards, frogs, and more! Together we can make amazing keychains, charms, pets, and even gifts for friends and family.

Bracelet Makers (Art)

Have you ever wanted to learn how to create string and beaded bracelets? Then this is the class for you! We will learn how to construct bracelets of different patterns and techniques while adding some jewels to our creations!

Breakout (Strategy)

In this class, we will learn different secret codes and ciphers so that we can be like spies, and keep our information a mystery. Together we will problem-solve to open locks and break out of any challenge that comes our way. We will use Breakout Edu, a digital platform, physical materials, and even create our own breakout adventures!

Building Masters (STEM)

So you have mastered basic building skills? Let’s get ready to create some extreme lego, k’nex, keva blocks and other material builds and challenges together.

Comic Creators (LAL/Art)

Do you love fairytales? Do you love comic books? Through our class, students will have the opportunity to create their own stories. We will read and review graphic novels to help us get inspired! Students will let their creativity grow as they form stories. Students will have a choice of creating a storybook or a comic book. Students can use paper materials or create videos online.

Computer Coding  (STEM)

Do you like to play video games and work on computers?  Learn the concepts behind programming and create your own interactive projects. Bring your programming to life as we learn to connect the virtual and physical worlds using Makey Makey and other stuff.  All levels of experience are welcome.

Cover Art (LAL/Art)

​​Students will create art for books that they have read ranging from cover art to chapter art. We will use all different materials and media to illustrate and advertise books we love!

Students will explore original projects that incorporate yarn, string, or other fibers to create original works of art. Students will create one-of-a-kind art projects, try some knitting or crocheting, bracelets, and more!

Let’s Cheer It Up (Fitness)

A course designed to teach the basics of cheerleading with one of the Eisenhower Middle School Cheer Coaches! We will review cheer techniques for motions, jumps, and stunts and learn some Cheers!

Learn to paint your favorite foods and video/book characters in this fun introductory acrylic painting class. Each painting is customizable with your favorite colors to make each creation your own! Learn the basics of painting along with shadowing, highlighting, and blending in this introductory course. The teacher will present step-by-step demonstrations while the students paint along.

Picture Books are Magic

Enjoy the magic of a picture book each day. After listening to a read-aloud of a wonderful picture book, a related activity or response will be created. Students can create a vocabulary word search for a friend, draw the character at different stages of their life, design a movie poster, write letters to the author or illustrator, draw a comic strip of the plot, act out a scene from the story, design a bookmark about the author's message, or simply write a blurb for the book. The list is endless.

Photography (STEM)

Do you love taking pictures and capturing those special moments in your life? In this class, students will learn the basics of photography including shot angles, shooting various subjects, using focal points, and more.  In addition, we will learn to edit, improve and transform your photos using computer software.  Use one of our cameras or bring your own.  All levels of experience are welcome.

Reader’s Theater (LAL)

We invite your students to this program created specifically to reinforce reading skills while taking part in readers’ theater performances. Students will read scripts of fun stories to practice decoding, spelling, and sight words to support reading fluency.  Students will create simple costumes and scenery and take part in group performances.  

Rising STARS. Music, Theater, and Dance (Music)

Children will learn and perform songs and dances, which will end in a culminating outdoor performance for parents at the end of a two-week session. Students will pick songs and learn choreography to fun music! We will explore elements of theater and music as well!

Science Experiments (Science)

Science experiments are so entertaining, and help teach children the basics of the scientific method and science in a fun and accessible way! Sports Franchise (SEL/Strategy)

During this class, students work in teams to develop their own sports franchise. We will consider the sport, location, population, and design of the stadium. We will also create a team name & logo and discuss aspects of marketing. Students will create a presentation to go with their sports franchise.

STEM Challenge (STEM)

Do you like to be creative and build awesome objects? Then join us in this STEM challenge! In this class, each student will choose a mystery paper bag of materials with a task. Then, each student will use the materials to make an object that will solve the problem on the card! Each day will bring a new challenge for every student.

Wild Cards (Math)

Do you like to play cards? Want to have some fun and become an amazing card shark? This is the class for you! Together we will learn and play classic games including Rummy, Crazy 8's, King's Corners, and more.  We will even practice some mysterious card magic tricks. But don't let us fool you, students will practice problem-solving strategies, probability, and general number sense too.

Bullet Journaling (SEL/LAL)

Bullet journaling is currently one of the trendiest ways to stay organized and involves skills like calligraphy, doodling, and lots of creativity thrown in! Students will enjoy a relaxing time chatting with peers while learning techniques for writing/drawing beautiful letters and doodles all while learning to organize.

Capoeira (Fitness)

Double period class

Capoeira is a beautiful and unique Afro-Brazilian martial art that has existed for over 500 years. It uses elements of music, song, and dance, while also teaching Brazilian history and the concept of collaboration. Students will study the tradition/culture, and learn movements as well as how to play the instruments used in capoeira.

Students can explore the Cricut (the machine that helps you craft!) and make simple things from around the house into amazing projects! We can create vinyl stickers to put on anything and more! Students will learn how to design on a computer and then create their own projects.

Fiber Art (Arts/STEM)

Students will explore original projects that incorporate yarn, string, or other fibers to create original works of art. Students will create one-of-a-kind art projects, try some knitting or crocheting, bracelets, and more!  

Forensic Science (Science)

Students will solve the mystery of who stole the bake sale money using forensic science. By using techniques such as fingerprinting, chromatography, DNA analysis, hair and fiber analysis, testimony review, paint splatter and tread analysis, students will catch the crumby culprit and find the hard-earned money!

Go Greek (Social Studies)

A course designed to introduce students to a deeper knowledge of Greek mythology characters. Students will learn more about the significance of these ancient figures through activities that bring ancient times to life. Students will also look at examples of Greek mythology characters in popular culture.

Knitting Basics (STEM)

Double period class

Pick your favorite colors and knit a scarf in those colors. Learn basic knitting stitches to make their very own scarf.

Musical Theater (Music)

Do you love to sing, dance, and act? Have you missed performing with your friends? Do you want to showcase all of your talents? Students will work on all elements of theater, and create a small show to perform for parents at the end of the 2 weeks! Students will create their own costumes, choose their own songs to perform, and will work on scenes to complement their songs. This will culminate in an outdoor performance for parents and friends!

Painting with Acrylics (Art)

Follows along in this step-by-step class to create your own painted botanical landscapes of trees and flowers with acrylic paint. Each painting is customizable with your favorite colors to make each creation your own! Learn the basics of painting along with shadowing, highlighting, and blending in this introductory course. The teacher will present live demonstrations while the students follow along to create their paintings.

Kids are told to play with their food, but why not play with their words? Words can be enjoyed in so many ways--they are versatile and fun! We will solve challenging word puzzles, like crosswords and riddles. We will play word games, such as Scattergories and Scrabble. Participants in this session will love playing with words through poetry, puzzles, and more!

Reader’s Theater (LAL)

Restart Book Club (LAL)

What if you had a chance to start over? In the book Restart, by Gordon Korman, the main character is a bully who has an accident that leaves him with amnesia. In our book club, we will uncover the elements of a good story and dive into character analysis through fun and creative activities such as reader’s theater, illustration, book jacket design, movie casting, advice blogs, and more!

Sports Franchise (SEL/Strategy)

During this class, students work in teams to develop their own sports franchises. We will consider the sport, location, population, and design of the stadium. We will also create a team name & logo and discuss aspects of marketing. Students will create a presentation to go with their sports franchise.

STEM Challenge (STEM)

Do you like to be creative and build awesome objects? Then join us in this STEM challenge! Each student will use the materials to make an object that will solve the problem on the card! Each day will bring a new challenge for every student. Students will also get to observe a fun experiment at the end of each class.

Ultimate “Frisbee” (Fitness)

Ultimate, casually known as "Ultimate Frisbee", is a growing team sport that originated in New Jersey. Students will learn the basics and fundamentals of the sport, which include how to throw a disc as well as the rules and gameplay of Ultimate. It is as fun as it is active.

Wild Cards (Math)

Do you like to play cards? Want to have some fun and become an amazing card shark? This is the class for you! Together we will learn and play classic games including Rummy, Crazy 8's, King's Corners, and more.  We will even practice some mysterious card magic tricks. But don't let us fool you, students will practice problem-solving strategies, probability, and general number sense too.

Yoga (Fitness)

Come and enjoy fun-filled yoga. They will then get to engage in a fun-filled yoga session related to the theme of the day. Students should bring their own yoga mat or towel to practice on and wear comfortable, gym clothes to practice.

Seventh & Eighth Grade

Bracelet Makers (Art)

Have you ever wanted to learn how to create string and beaded bracelets? Then this is the class for you! We will learn how to construct bracelets of different patterns and techniques while adding some jewels to our creations!

Breakout (Strategy)

In this class, we will learn different secret codes and ciphers so that we can be like spies, and keep our information a mystery. Together we will problem-solve to open locks and break out of any challenge that comes our way. We will use Breakout Edu, a digital platform, physical materials, and even create our own breakout adventures!

Bullet Journaling (SEL/LAL)

Bullet journaling is currently one of the trendiest ways to stay organized and involves skills like calligraphy, doodling, and lots of creativity thrown in! Students will enjoy a relaxing time chatting with peers while learning techniques for writing/drawing beautiful letters and doodles all while learning to organize.

Capoeira (Fitness)

Double period class

Capoeira is a beautiful and unique Afro-Brazilian martial art that has existed for over 500 years. It uses elements of music, song, and dance, while also teaching Brazilian history and the concept of collaboration. Students will study the tradition/culture, and learn movements as well as how to play the instruments used in capoeira.

Classic Board Games (SEL/Strategy)

Remember the games we grew up loving? Checkers, Chess, Connect-Four, Candyland, Sorry!, and many more! Students will have a chance to learn and play all different types of traditional games. No screens allowed!

Computer Coding  (STEM)

Do you like to play video games and work on computers?  Learn the concepts behind programming and create your own interactive projects. Bring your programming to life as we learn to connect the virtual and physical worlds using Makey Makey and other stuff.  All levels of experience are welcome.

Cover Art (LAL/Art)

​​Students will create art for books that they have read ranging from cover art to chapter art. We will use all different materials and media to illustrate and advertise books we love!  

Cricut Makers (STEM/Art)

Students can explore the Cricut (the machine that helps you craft!) and make simple things from around the house into amazing projects! We can create vinyl stickers to put on anything and more! Students will learn how to design on a computer and then create their own projects.

Fiber Art (Arts/STEM)

Students will explore original projects that incorporate yarn, string, or other fibers to create original works of art. Students will create one-of-a-kind art projects, try some knitting or crocheting, bracelets, and more!  

Go Greek (Social Studies)

A course designed to introduce students to a deeper knowledge of Greek mythology characters. Students will learn more about the significance of these ancient figures through activities that bring ancient times to life. Students will also look at examples of Greek mythology characters in popular culture.

Let’s Cheer It Up (Fitness)

A course designed to teach the basics of cheerleading with one of the Eisenhower Middle School Cheer Coaches! We will review cheer techniques for motions, jumps, and stunts and learn some EMS Cheers! This is great if you want to be an EMS Cheerleader, but not required!

Library Extravaganza (LAL)

During this class, students talk about books! Booklists, reviews, author info, genre information, independent reading, and more will be discussed and shared! Students will bring in books they have read and are reading to help keep the circulation of library books flowing and write their own book reviews.

Move It (Fitness)

In this class, your child will interact and play with peers as they learn and engage in the rules and fun of classic and new games they could play. We will focus on playing all kinds of games indoor and outdoor giving students the opportunity to learn and get involved with as many games as possible.

Musical Theater (Music)

Do you love to sing, dance, and act? Have you missed performing with your friends? Do you want to showcase all of your talents? Students will work on all elements of theater, and create a small show to perform for parents at the end of the 2 weeks! Students will create their own costumes, choose their own songs to perform, and will work on scenes to complement their songs. This will culminate in an outdoor performance for parents and friends!

Painting Masterpieces (Art)

Double period class

Follow along in this step-by-step class to create your own masterpieces with acrylic paint. Each painting is customizable with your favorite colors to make each creation your own! Learn the basics of painting along with shadowing, highlighting, and blending in this introductory course. The teacher will present step-by-step demonstrations while the students paint along.

Poetry and Lyrics (LAL)

Poetry is an emotionally expressive form of performance art. Songs are basically poetry put to music. For this course, students will explore poetry and songs to create their own original pieces.

Quilling & Calligraphy (Art)

Have you ever tried quilling? The art of rolling strips of paper of various colors and creating unique pieces of artwork. Together we will create beautiful works of art. We will also cover some calligraphy - the visual art related to writing.

Dive into yoga this summer! Students will be guided through different yoga classes each day. Each day will have a new intention to help bring mindfulness, strength, and focus. Breathing techniques and various yoga postures for body positivity, flexibility, and self-esteem will be practiced in all classes.
