IITM’s BS in Data Science and Applications

Career choices Report - April 2025

We see the students of this program pursuing a Masters/PhD program after completing the degree or they choose to enter the corporate world - either securing opportunities on their own (through their colleges and networks) or go through IITM's BS placement cell (IIC) for internships or placements.

1. Self secured Internships and Jobs - As reported by the students

This information is submitted by the students through a survey during the BS program’s course registration. The data shown here accounts for only the students who declared that the knowledge obtained from the BS program and showcasing it on the resume helped them secure the internship/job. We find that a large fraction of the students are able to accomplish this on their own.

The stipend per month as declared by the students for internships and the salary per annum for those who got jobs can be seen below. Those with much larger salaries are primarily working professionals with many years of experience.

2. The following tables show the number of students who have become eligible for applying for internships and placements through IIC and how many have secured such opportunities.

3. Higher Education opportunities:

Many students apply for masters and PhD programs within and outside India. This could also be the next career path for them apart from taking up a job. This information is submitted by the students of all levels through a survey during the BS program’s course registration.

4. Performance in GATE exams - Data Science and AI paper

Our students have obtained top ranks  in the GATE exam, which is the competitive exam for admission into the Masters’ programs at premier institutes like the IITs, NITs, IISc, etc.
