What does the National Curriculum say about  Art?

Purpose of study

Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation.

We explore different artists and their techniques to build our art knowledge and skills. Here are some of them:

Year 1 Wassily Kandinsky        Year 2 Wassily Kandinsky       Year 3 Vincent Van Gogh

Year 4 Jackson Pollack           Year 5 Sonia Delaunay                  Year 6 Kehinde Riley

How can parents & carers support children at home with Art?

To enrich your child’s learning experiences further you can:

  • Visit Art galleries with your child (many of which have free entry)
  • Provide a range of art opportunities for your child to develop their artistic skills at home using a range of tools and materials
  • Encourage your child to research about different artists and their work
  • Visit the library or use the internet to find out more
  • Ensuring that children are given the opportunity to discuss their learning journey in school with you at home
  • Use the Knowledge Organiser, uploaded to your child’s Google Classroom at the beginning of each unit of work, to discuss each artist’s own style.
