What is a School-Parent Compact?

A School-Parent Compact for Achievement is an agreement that parents, students, and teachers develop together. It explains how parents and teachers will work together to make sure all our students reach grade-level standards.

Effective compacts:

• Link to goals of the school improvement plan
• Focus on student learning
• Describe how teachers will help students develop those skills using high-quality instruction
• Share specific strategies parents can use at home
• Explain how teachers and parents will communicate about student progress
• Describe opportunities for parents to volunteer, observe, and participate in the classroom

Jointly Developed

The parents, students, and staff of Norman Park Elementary School partnered together to develop this school-parent compact for achievement. Teachers suggested home learning strategies, parents added Input about the types of support they needed, and students told us what would help them learn. Parents are encouraged to attend annual revision meetings held each spring to review the compact and make suggestions based on student needs and school Improvement goals. Parents are also encouraged to participate in the annual Title I parent survey that is also used as a tool to collect parent feedback regarding the current Title I programs and policies.

To understand how working together can benefit your child. It Is first important to understand the district's and school's goals for student academic achievement.

Colquitt County School System Goals:

• Increase student achievement as measured by the GMAS (Content Mastery and Levels 3 and 4) by 3 percentage points.
• Using FY22 district attendance data, the district will decrease the percentage of students who miss more than 10 school days by 3 percentage points.

Norman Park Elementary Goals:

• Norman Park Elementary School will increase the number of students meeting their projected growth by 10% on MAP Reading and MAP Math.
• Norman Park Elementary School will increase the percentage of students meeting or exceeding grade level state expectations by 5% on GMAS Science End of Grade Assessment.

Our school will focus on the following areas:

• Improve MAP Reading benchmark scores by focusing on basic reading and comprehension skills.
• Increase MAP Math benchmark scores by focusing on number sense, operations and algebraic thinking, and understanding math word problems.
• Improve GMAS Science scores by implementing hands-on lessons to build knowledge of scientific concepts. Science content will be integrated into reading lessons to enhance vocabulary and inferencing skills.

SCHOOL/TEACHER RESPONSIBILITIES:

In the classroom, teachers will:

• Provide parents with a monthly newsletter that features information, games, web resources and other activities focusing on reading comprehension, math strategies, and science concepts introduced in the class that families can practice to improve students reading, math, and science skills.
• Provide parents reading, math, and science parent workshops where teachers will model specific reading strategies to address reading comprehension, math instructional strategies and science concepts and provide tools that parents can use to help develop vocabulary/comprehension, number sense and science understanding with their children at home.
• Provide parent math and science make-it/take-it workshops where teachers will model grade level number sense activities and science concepts to provide parents with the activities and information that they can use to have fun engaging interactions with their students at home in mathematics and science.
•  Provide information in our school web page and our class newsletter with links to family friendly websites for building vocabulary/comprehension and math and science skills.

Families

At home, parents will:

• Use resources and ideas provided by teachers to practice reading comprehension, math strategies, and science concepts at home.
• Attend parent reading, math, and science workshops and use the reading and math strategies to improve understanding and science instructional tools to help develop my child’s science skills at home.
• Attend the parent math and science workshops and use the number sense activities and science activities provided in engaging ways to practice math and science using the activities with my child at home.

Students

As a student, I will:

• Take home Weekly folders so that my parent can receive information about parent workshops/conferences and other parent events at my school that will help me with reading, math and science.
• Work with my parent to use the reading comprehension strategies, math instructional strategies, and science instructional information gained from the parent workshops to help me develop my reading comprehension skills, number sense, and science understanding so that I can learn better in the classroom.
• Work with my parents to use the math number sense activities and science activities from the parent workshops to help me develop my math number sense skills and science knowledge so that I can better understand learning in the classroom.
• Play the games/activities from the websites posted on our school webpage and on the class newsletters that focus on reading, math, and science skills.

Communication About Student Learning

Norman Park Elementary is committed to frequent two-way communication with families about children’s learning. Some of the ways you can expect us to reach you are:

• Weekly folders
• “Remind” app messages
• Updates on the school website and current grade level and classroom newsletters
• Grade level meetings to help with understanding of student progress and classroom instruction.
• Parent-teacher conferences in October, March and throughout the school year as needed
