ELA Adoption Committee: K-8 ELA Materials

Date: Thursday, January 30th, 2025

- Call to Order
- Meeting called to order at 2:45pm
- Welcome
- Dr. Slover welcomed the participants and provided an overview of how the sessions would work to accommodate the various dismissal times
- Participants were advised that they will be the leads for this adoption and will be bringing the information to the teachers at their school sites
- Participants were told that everything can be found on the district website.
- Roll Call and Introductions
- Committee members introduced themselves, sharing role, site and strength
- 16 committee members in attendance
- Open Meeting Laws
- Dr. Slover shared the open meeting laws with participants
- “All meetings of any public body shall be public meetings and all persons so desiring shall be permitted to attend and listen to the deliberations and proceedings.” A.R.S. § 38- 431.01(A).
- “It is the public policy of this state that meetings of public bodies be conducted openly and that notices and agendas be provided for such meetings which contain such information as is reasonably necessary to inform the public of the matters to be discussed or decided.” A.R.S. § 38-431.09.
- All meeting minutes, presentations and shared resources will be shared on the district website.
- Committee Goals
- Purpose is to review, evaluate and recommend high quality and appropriate textbooks and instructional resources to be recommended for approval by the governing boards for grades KG-8th grade
- Committee Norms and Expectations
- Norms were shared with the committee, emphasizing questions and challenges being welcomed, while listening to understand and asking questions to support clarification
- Committee Timeline
- The whole timeline was shared with the group beginning with the RFP process that began on 12/9.
- The committee will make it’s recommendation to the board in June of 2025
- Time can be added id needed for the team to be comfortable with recommendations
- Training begins in the 25/26 school year.
- Full implementation will begin in the 26/27 school year.

- Mrs. Tamayo reviewed the expectation that committee members will review the standards in their grade level band

- Prior to meeting #2, committee members will review the shared learning on The Science of Reading
- Vendor Criteria (RFP)
- Vendors were selected based on the ADE MOWR approved list

- Rubric Review
- A rubric will be used to analyse the proposed curriculum and streamline the decision-making process and provide the same opportunity to all vendors
- The steps for reviewing the rubric have been shared

- Build understanding of the rubric components
- Review in common grade level bands, suggest edits, if needed
- Final rubric presented to committee 2/13/25
- Rubric consists of a 1-3-5 scoring and an area for comments
- Ensuring the committee agrees with the rubric and it’s alignment with the RFP and district needs

- District data was shared historical AASA Data
- Participants are expected to read the 2 Science of Reading Articles and become familiar the the District ELA Essential Standards for their assigned grade level bands

Questions:
How did we select the vendors to review?
How will the selected curriculum work with current programs like Spalding and Heggerty?
Will it take the place of current district assessments, or how will it work in alignment with the assessment plan?
