SCORE Boston celebrated Women’s Entrepreneurship!

On May 18th Women entrepreneurs from the Framingham-Worcester-Boston region gathered together for a one-day conference at the Framingham Sheraton to celebrate their success as women in business. The event inspired start-up entrepreneurs and those already in business to see personal and business growth potential and to share those ideas with other women entrepreneurs.

According to Laura Beechwood, co-Event Planner and one of the mentors of Boston SCORE, the day can summed up in a sentence - Imagine a day for, by and about women carving their path to business success and making their own entrepreneurial dreams a reality.

Recap of Day’s Event:

Celebrating Women’s Entrepreneurship began with an address from Lt Governor Karyn Polito who spoke on the vibrancy of female business growth in the Commonwealth.

Following this, Debra Penta, CEO of Penta Communications and host of TV show Top Growth led a panel discussion on overcoming business challenges and soaring to success.  All seven of the women in the panel discussion had received guidance from SCORE to help them grow their companies. The panelists were: Ann Foley-Collins, Glee Gifts, Maureen Fabry, The Brew House, Jeanne Richardson, Blue Dynasty Travel and Entertainment, Sonal Khakhar, Aahana’s Naturals, Katherine Huck, The Happy Kid Company and Tamar Brown, Sitka Gallery.

The morning session concluded with a TD Bank small business growth workshop led by Renee Durning, Business Banking Relationship Manager.

Framingham Councilor Margareth Shephard and Entrepreneur and celebrity cook Lisa Dowd of Cheesy Street Grill were the afternoon luncheon speakers. Councilor Shepherd, herself an entrepreneur, spoke movingly about the challenges that women entrepreneurs from immigrant populations face as they soar to success. Lisa Dowd, founder of Cheesy Street Grill, came to entrepreneurship as a second career. After leaving a life in corporate America she followed a dream to open a food enterprise. Her chain of stores Cheesy Street Grill can now to found along the Mass Pike and she is opening franchises nationwide. She regaled the audience by telling the group what it was like to tell her success on The Rachel Ray Show.

Following lunch, the attendees had a choice of three skill building workshops:

1. How to Get a Government Grant was led by Nadine Boone SBA Lead Business Opportunity Specialist and Lead Economic Development Specialist.

2.  Social Media to Grow YOUR Business led by Susan LaPlante Dube, Principal Precision Marketing Group, and

3. Business and Personal Branding, led by Itala Keller, Founder IK Images.

“The conference was designed to provide resources and support to a wide range of attendees,” explains Co-event Planner Johanne Cimon of Worcester SCORE.  “We were very happy to find a conference location in Framingham, as it has the fifth largest Brazilian population in the United States.  We hope to see more clients and also to get more bi-lingual mentors to better serve the growing number of women businesses in the area.”
