Strategic Priorities for the Work of the Board and the Superintendent
Dr. Steve Joel’s Notes and Summary
The board and superintendent leadership team met for a full day on Wednesday, June 22, for the purpose of developing strategic priorities for district improvement for the 2022-23 school year. The team believes that working together for the betterment of children will yield the results that parents, staff and community desire.
The following are the priorities/goals for 2022-23.
Priority: To improve upon district communications between and among the superintendent, members of the board, staff and community.
- Identify a small committee of board members to work with the superintendent to identify gaps in communication that can be addressed regarding internal communication.
- As the gaps are identified, research ways to address the gaps and engage key stakeholder groups. This might include, but not be limited to, forming a community based Key Communicator Council as well as developing ways to engage staff and parents on a regular basis. Research web-based opportunities (eg, Let’s Talk via K-12 Insight or Thought Exchange) that can assist in creating higher engagement among groups.
Priority: To review and revise the existing appraisal process and protocol for the superintendent.
- Identify a small committee of the board to work with the superintendent to research current best practice for superintendents in Wyoming and surrounding states.
- Ensure that the protocol reflects performance that is based, in part, on mutually derived goals and priorities but that is also consistent with state requirements. The finished product should include timelines, opportunities for 2-way conversation leading up to the completion of the appraisal and clearly defined roles for members of the board that includes timelines.
Priority: To continue to emphasize the importance of student academic growth and participation in extra and co-curricular activities as the recovery from the Pandemic continues.
- Ensure that school improvement goals reflect current student data.
- Identify strategies that can be deployed to support students that have experienced significant learning loss.
