Rules and Ethics
- Event’s rules: Each player needs to read the attending event’s details carefully before registering. Every different tournament details including rules, bracket and schedule is given on the meetup link here. Registering in any event is acknowledging event’s all the rules and regulations.
- Both players are responsible for immediately reporting their match result and verifying that the correct result has been posted on the tournament bracket. Notify the TD immediately if an incorrect result is posted; it may be corrected even if the next match has started. Results shall be emailed to report@canadabackgammon.ca
- Manual report of the results: both opponents complete the results of each game of a match separately on a paper note, including their names and results to give to the TD.
- Match reviews: If the match video has been prepared and sent for review and refereeing, it will be reviewed one day after the match and if it leads to a change in the results with the TD team opinion, both sides players will be informed. TD’s decision will be accepted by players.
- Attendance: Always arrive 15 minutes prior to the event’s start time. First round starts exactly on the scheduled time. Whoever is not presented on time will get out of the list and the first round’s players list will be shuffled accordingly. No delay excuse can be accepted. Other rounds start right at the end of the round before.
- Disagreement on equipment choice, direction of play and checker color is resolved by roll of the dice- player rolling higher dice has the choice if the tools are standard or acceptable by the TD or the TD’s final decision if any disagreement happens.
- Use of a timer is mandatory, with time settings announced by the tournament director. TD reserves to impose timer on any un-timered match. It's the player's responsibility to have the timer ready prior to the competition. Buy or Install and configure and practice the introduced timer before attending the events. - Timer settings twelve seconds delay in addition to ninety seconds (afternoon events) to two minutes (full day events) per point reserved time.
- Pause: If you need to judge during the match, be sure to pause the timer so that your time is saved otherwise the timer can not be revised. When each single game is over, pause the clock temporarily to reset the checkers and then unpause the timer again before the new game’s first checker action.
- Long matches, TD has the option to stop no timer matches if those matches take longer than the longest with-timer played match and the time spent is longer than an hour.
- Pausing timer or missing to on time starting the timer for any reason without TD’s permission switches the match to a no timer match or TD’s decides.
- Using dice is only one pair when using a timer.
- Using a cup, dice to be well shaken at least triple times horizontally and vertically before throwing on the right side of the board.
- Accepted dice: Only accepted standard dice sizes are ½”, 9/16” or ⅝”. Selecting Precision dice is highly recommended. If you need dice, inform the TD at least one day prior to the event.
- Calling the dice, speaking irrelevantly, making any noise be avoided unless both players need it and not disturbing other players.
- Dice stealing: You are not allowed and strongly forbidden to touch the opponent’s rolled dice unless the opponent has fully played his dice and has hit the timer.
- Disturbance: On the opponent’s turn, do not try to disturb the concentration. In this case pause the timer and ask the TD to help. Talking to the opponent or others during the game is not allowed in any way unless it’s related to an illegal checker movement.
- Using a baffle box to roll is optional for all players. If only one player rolls in the baffle box, the tower shall be installed on the same player’s side and the home board shall be the opposite side of the baffle box. Using a cup to roll the dice is mandatory even when anyone rolls in a baffle box.
- Spectators are allowed to watch a match but must remain absolutely silent with no exception for a minimum distance of two meters to the match table. Players shall not feel you are observing their match. Spectators must move away from the area if they need to talk with others or on the phone. Spectators must not point out player errors, cube position, score or any other matters.
- Supplying all equipment, board, dice, scoreboard, timer and others is the responsibility of the players. TD has no responsibility to supply any equipment.
- Rolling dice over the checker is always accepted and needs to be played to save time.
- Each round starts with the TD’s announcement only.
- Events optional payments (with or without prizes) are accepted to the day before the event and can’t be transferred, reimbursed or saved to the next events.
- Premium monthly membership due is the day before the month’s first event and is valid only for the same month's events.
- Renting boards, timers and equipment is potentially possible with a day notice.
- General language: Canada is a multicultural country. Although all nationalities and languages are deeply respected, our general languages are only English or French for easier communication. If you need a translator inform us before registering in any event. This rule is to respect all players who don't know your language in a public event.
- Other conditions and rules that might not be included on this page will be referred to the tournament director TD to decide on a case-by-case basis.
- Potential questions: If you have any questions, ask the tournament director TD before the tournament starts. Well knowing the rules is the players responsibility.
- Ethics: The joy of backgammon is dice and luck, and losing is part of the joy of playing backgammon. If you feel sad or nervous about losing, and unfairness of the match, you are certainly not alone in this feeling. Try to smile and congratulate the winning opponent and wish him the best. Of course he was luckier than you and your loss does not mean your game skill is weaker.
- Cancellation: In case of any potential inconvenience of the event cancellation or modification tournament director will announce it over the event’s meetup page. You need to double check the meetup event’s information prior to leaving your location.
- Payments: All payments shall get fully paid prior to registering in any event. Not paid players can’t benefit from any discounts and shall pay the regular with prizes amount of the event entree fees.
- Copyrights: All documentations, photography and video recording by anyone and any device during the in person live and also online events are copyrighted to Canada Backgammon.
- Photo, Video permissions: Attending any in person live and also online events is acknowledging full permission to documenting, photography and video recording to the event organizer.
- Acknowledgement: Attending any Canada Backgammon event means the attendant has fully read, understood and accepted the rules.
