FHS News & UPdates - 06.07.21
Dear Ferndale High School Eagles,
To say that this has been a unique year together is an understatement. Though the previous year changed to online abruptly in response to the pandemic, August 2020, began a school year in an entirely new territory. We threw ourselves into virtual learning and figured out what was working and what was not. Both staff and students persevered through a whole new way of teaching and learning. We figured out how to connect with one another online each day, balance online classes with independent work time, and keep track of a changing daily schedule.
I want to take a moment to thank each and every one of our students for your flexibility and resilience in this ever evolving year. As a new principal, I was perplexed on how to get to know each of you in the Fall, however, through the swag pick up days, pop ups, and other events, I began to connect with some of our students. What I learned quickly is that our students are leaders and look for opportunities to interact with one another. I learned that students figure out ways to help themselves and help others regardless of being away from our school building. I learned that the relationships built at school go beyond our walls and that friends were checking in with one another. I learned that our students have a voice and that it is an honor to be in the presence of their reflection and input. I learned that our students have a strength that helped carry our staff and families through the past year.
To our students that joined FHS for the first time this year, we had a different start of the year. Being new myself, it took me time to get to know all things FHS. We are a special cohort that started in a new school without physically being in the building. As we gather in larger numbers, we will look out for one another as we get used to our new surroundings.
To our students that came back to FHS from last year and will be returning, you are the anchor. You represent all that is wonderful about our family and offer insight into how it can be made better. The times we spend together mean so much to our staff. When you see something that is going well, you share it. When you observe something that can be changed for the better, you say it. Your energy, enthusiasm, and input is at the core of our school.
To our students that are graduating FHS this year, you are our beacon. During high school, you learned and practiced ways of learning, ways of being, and ways of solving. You are the graduating class that spent the entire school year during a global pandemic. You have adapted and grown in ways that go beyond our school walls. Along with all of your classmates, you learned the importance of taking care of yourself in order to take care of others. There is power in knowing that your own well-being is a priority. You navigated the tasks for school while preparing for your next steps in life. Our wish for each of you is to be fulfilled, happy, productive, and healthy. It has been a privilege for our staff to serve you in your journey.
Here’s to a year that really pushed us to new limits and created new spaces for learning, being, and growing.
Thank you for your partnership,
Ms. Radhika Issac
