This Week |
Another fantastic week. Students have continued working hard completing their independent prep. It is wonderful to see their dedication to their studies. Lunchtime R &D: Debate Club After much debate, Somerset Studio's first Debate Club selected the first topic of the year! Our founding-fellow debaters kicked off our inaugural Debate Club meeting this Monday! We set out our postulates and after a lively and democratic discussion, we selected a rather pertinent topic for our first debate: Students should not have phones at school; schools should be phone-free zones! Next Monday we will be sharing tips and tricks for effective debating as well as preparing our arguments by arming ourselves with some research and learning skills of persuasion but it is not late to join us - whether you are a confident debater or just a curious beginner, this is your chance to upskill yourself, express your opinions, engage in lively discussions on pressing topics and expand your horizons! Everybody is welcome! Lunchtime - Chess Some of our students have been enjoying playing chess over their lunchtimes. It has been wonderful to see them apply their strategic plans to succeed in this awesome game of wit. |
For Families |
Free School Meals Do you wonder if your child is eligible for free school meals, please click here to find out more and apply through the local authority. For those accessing free school meals the amount of £3.20 allocated to student accounts each day and wiped if not spent each night. This is enough for students to get a meal deal for lunch. If students are also making purchases at break they will be using this money and may not have enough when it comes to lunch to get a lunch meal deal, they can however purchase something else at a lower cost with their remaining funds. Parent/Carer Governor Positions We excitedly present this rare opportunity to have a direct and strategic role in the mission of our school. We are completely committed to continuous evaluation and improvement and the Governors are central to this whole process. The Governing Body must include Parent/Carer Governors who are elected by parents/carers of young people at each school in the Trust. Now that two governors have reached the end of their term, we have vacancies for Parent/Carer Governors at Somerset Studio School. Applications should be made via the following link: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd2o33A_2Nc3PQzmq8J65qq40wYTfu3KG1ofNV9uBOS and returned by Monday 4th November at Midday. Please find letter regarding this opportunity Flu Vaccination On Monday we have the HCRG team coming in to administer flu vaccinations for students in years 10 & 11. If you have not completed the permissions form previously sent out, but wish for your young person to get the flu vaccination, you can call 03002 470082 to give them your permission. Without permission students will not be getting the vaccination. On Friday the phone line will only be live from 9am-4:30pm. Year 10 Parents’/Carers’ Evening Next Thursday,17th October, is year 10 Parents’/carers’ evening. This will be held in person from 4pm-6.15pm. We offer a first come, first served basis with appointments and apologise if you have been unable to book all the appointments you want. We will have another parents’/carers’ evening later in the year. Donations Do you have any board games, card games or books you no longer use and would be willing to donate to a new home? If you do, please can we ask these to be dropped off to the main office. Thank you in advance for your generous donations, our students will love some new games/books. |
