Symmetry Butterflies

Ms. Tessa's Instructional Video

(For this project you will need some type of art material that can transfer. Paint works best, but if you don’t have any you can use graphite (pencil) or even get creative and paint with coffee!)

  1. Fold a piece of paper in half horizontally.
  2. Open the paper and paint a vertical line right in the crease. The line should not go all the way to the top or bottom of the paper.
  3. At the top of the line only on ONE HALF of the paper draw the top wing extending it to the corner of the paper
  4. At the bottom of the line draw the lower wing, but make it more rounded than the previous wing.
  5. Make sure your paint is still wet. Fold the paper back shut.
  6. Once paper is folded rub it with your hands so the paint transfers to the other side.
  7. Open your paper to reveal your entire butterfly. Now you can neaten it up and add details.
  8. Research a type of butterfly that appeals to you and use it as your inspiration for your details and color choices.
  9. Take a photo of your project and include the name of the butterfly you used (Mine would be “Swallowtail”) email your photo to me @ tessa.vanravenswaay@k12.sd.us
