Week at a Glance for the Week of: August 16-20

Grade level: Kindergarten

Instructional Guidance: The activities below may be done at any point in the week. State standards require at least 135 minutes per week of physical activity. It is recommended that the P.E. material below be used three times per week to guide physical activity. The art and music activities are intended for once per week instruction. Additional time may be spent on any of these activities, but should not limit the time spent on other grade level content.

Essential Learning for this week:

Art

  • Introduction of the element of line
  • Begin practice of identifying different types of line
  • Practice holding writing instruments such as crayons or pencils and drawing various lines.

Music

  • Beginning vocal exploration
  • An introduction to basic non-locomotor movement to music
  • Begin practice with a steady beat

Physical Education

  • Introduction of movement patterns and fitness calendar
  • Begin practice of fundamental strategies in physical education

Learning Targets & Activities

Art

Learn: a) Different types of lines b) experience finding different types of lines in our environment, c) experience drawing a variety of lines

Do: a) Look at the slide show Lines, Lines Everywhere and talk about the different types of lines with your parent, b) Watch this video of What Could I be?  c) Following the video, students should go on a line scavenger hunt around the home or outside with a parent and try to find: straight lines, are they vertical, horizontal, or diagonal? Zig-zag lines, where did you find them? A curvy line, where did you find it? d) get out paper and crayons or pencils and practice drawing all the lines found on the scavenger hunt.

Music

Learn: a) How your voice can move, b) ways to move your body while standing still and c) experience the steady beat in music

Do: a) Follow the bumble bees and soccer balls with your voice, b) Move with the students in this video to the “Syncopated Clock” and/or do the actions described in “If You’re Happy and You Know It” and c) keep the steady beat with Mr. Donnelly

Physical Education

Learn: a) How to listen for cue words b) learn basic movement patterns c) fitness calendar

Do: a) Use the choice board to get familiar with basic movement patterns and responding to cue words Video b) use the link to access our monthly fitness Calendar
