SUBJECT:- Practical Woodworking |
Design, Engineering & Technology
What are the aims of this course?
The Course is practical and experiential in nature. It focuses on the development of practical woodworking. It provides opportunities for learners to gain practical craft skills in the use of a range of tools, equipment and materials, working with wood and manufactured boards. It allows learners to follow a series of activities through to the completion of a finished item.
The Course provides opportunities to develop and enhance practical creativity and practical problem-solving skills, and to gain an appreciation of safe working practices in a workshop or similar environment.
The aims of the Course are to enable learners to:
What will I be learning about in the course?
In S3 you will hone the skills that are required to gain success at National 4/5 level in Practical Woodworking in S4.
The course comprises of three Units.
Carcase construction
In this Unit, learners will develop knowledge of a range of common tools and equipment used in carcase construction. The learner will also develop skills for measuring and marking out and for preliminary cutting and shaping of materials. Candidates will work from drawings which require some interpretation by them.
Frame construction
In this Unit, learners will develop skills in working with different woodworking materials. This Unit helps learners to develop skills in cutting, shaping, fixing and joining materials, using a variety of appropriate craft techniques used in flat-frame construction.
Machining and finishing
In this Unit, learners will develop skills and knowledge of using power tools and machinery.
In each of the three Units, learners will develop an appreciation of safe working practices in a workshop environment. They will also develop knowledge of good practice in sustainability and recycling.
What skills will I develop?
Course activities will provide you with opportunities to build self-confidence, generic and transferable skills in numeracy, employability skills, thinking skills, and skills in planning and organising work tasks and working independently and in collaboration with others, as well as skills in communication and in self- and peer-evaluation in a practical craft context.
What learning and teaching approaches will I experience?
You will experience many different approaches to your learning. These will include whole class lessons and demonstrations, as well as learning within small groups and independently. You will be encouraged to take responsibility for some of your learning.
How will I be assessed?
All Units in the course are internally assessed on a pass/fail basis. There is an assignment (70% of the course) and an examination in S4 which equates to 30% of the course award.
What are the homework requirements?
A small amount of homework is required for this course. This will take the form of questions and answer tasks.
What might the course lead to in the future?
This Course or its Units may provide progression to:
