Everyday Math Unit 7 Plan

Every Day Math Unit 7: Patterns and Rules

Unit Understandings and Key Objectives:

Use addition and subtraction to create and obtain information from tables, bar graphs and tally charts.  Second graders identify, create, complete, and extend number patterns involving addition, subtraction, skip counting, and arrays of objects. In addition, they describe the rule for a number pattern.  Second graders recognize weight as an attribute of an object.

Power standards:

2.2.1.1

2.1.2.6

2.3.2.2

Essential Questions:

To understand, students will need to consider questions like…

  • Can I start at any number when I skip-count?
  • Is there always a pattern when I skip-count?
  • If I know my math facts, can I add big numbers that have lots of zeros?
  • How can I use a calculator to divide something in half or double something?
  • How come I have to order the numbers before I figure out the median?
  • What do I do if there isn’t a number in the middle?

Students will know…

  • that titles and labels are needed on data representations so the information can be interpreted correctly.
  • there are many ways to describe a set of numbers, median, minimum, maximum, and range are some examples.
  • the range tells you how different your data is.
  • the median is the middle number (or half-way between the middle two numbers).

Students will be able to…

  • pose questions and gather data about themselves and their surroundings.
  • represent data using concrete objects, pictures, and graphs.
  • describe parts of the data and the set of data as a whole to determine what the data show.
  • use the information on a graph to answer questions.
  • recognize patterns in numbers and apply the pattern to predict what comes next in a number pattern.
  • describe the rule for a given number pattern.
  • use a given rule to extend or complete a number pattern.
  • use patterns to solve problems.
  • calculate the median of a set of numbers.
  • calculate the range of a set of numbers.

Key Vocabulary:

  • double
  • half (halve)
  • multiple of ten
  • scale
  • weight
  • pounds
  • length
  • arm span
  • line plot
  • median
  • frequency
  • bar graph

Common Misunderstandings:

Students may think…

  • the scale is automatically one and overlook the scale in a bar graph.
  • that one category of data "won" or is the most without referring to the meaning of the data; students may focus on the physical characteristics of the data representation rather than what the bars on the graph represent when analyzing data.
  • all patterns are repeating patterns.
  • patterns involve only pictures, objects, or movements.
  • growth patterns only get bigger, not realizing patterns can shrink.
  • you don’t need to order the numbers before calculating the median.
  • there is always a number in the middle when you calculate the median; they might cross out the numbers, one from each side, until you have one number remaining.

Learning Activities:

Lesson 7-1 Patterns in Counting, one day

Lesson 7-2 Extending Complements of 10, one day

  • Review numbers that make ten ~ 3 +7, 5 + 5, etc.  Then go into numbers that make the next multiple of ten ~ 43 + 7, 16 + 4, etc.  This is a key skill for mental math strategies now and in future grades.  You can differentiate for higher students by giving them a number and asking how much more you would need to get to 100.

Lesson 7-3 Mental Arithmetic: A Basketball Game, one day

  • Basketball Addition together using MJ pages 166-167
  • use MM 200 if you want to play more than once
  • MJ page 168 ~ discuss and write together or with a partner
  • Math Box page 169 ~ Boxes 1-4 independently, Boxes 5-6 together

Lesson 7-7 Middle Value (Median) of a Set of Data, one day

  • Review vocab words
  • Follow Jump Data activity as written in the Teacher Guide 577-579

Stress that students need to write the numbers in order before they start crossing them off.

Teach students to figure out the median by crossing off the numbers and saying as they cross them off,

“One, one (as they cross one off of each end).  Two, two.” etc.  If there are two numbers in the middle, DO NOT tell students to pick a number (as written in the Teacher Guide).  Instead, help them find the number between the two middle numbers.

Lesson 7-8 Frequency Distributions, one day.

Create the Line Plot on the board first.  Before having the students stick their post-it on the graph, have students get in a line according to the order of their arm span.  Then calculate the median by having one student from each end sit down until the middle person (or two people) is the only one left standing.

  • Follow the Teacher Guide pages 583-586 using MJ pages 180 and 181
