TRANSCRIPT:

Hello and thanks for joining me for episode number 54 of the one-five. As always, I am your podcast hostess - Tricia Louis - and in this weekly podcast, I hope to bring you some great edtech tools, tips, and tricks.

In this week’s episode, I will be talking about the Flat Music Snippet Google Docs & Slides Add-On. Music Snippet is a free add-on that allows users to add musical notation to your google docs and slides projects. This Add-On is under the parent company of Flat which is an online collaborative music composition tool.

If you don’t know about Google Add-Ons, here is the 411. Google Add-Ons are almost like chrome extensions - they have a very niche purpose but can be super powerful for what you need. You can access the Add-ons store through the extensions menu in docs, sheets, or slides. These Add-ons can be free or have options to purchase more features. Once installed, you can call on the Add-on by accessing that same extensions menu.

Now back to the Music Snippet Add-on. Once you have that installed you can activate it and compose your music that will be inserted as a picture file in your document. If you want the option to edit the music snippet, you will have to pay the $19/year upgrade. What I like about this Add-On is that it is super easy to use for teachers and students and allows for musical composition in something students most likely already know how to use - google slides and docs! I like to pair this Add-On with the Mote Extension - see show notes for links to both. The Mote extension allows you to record your voice OR anything else! (Just as an FYI, Mote has a free tier just like Music Snippet, so you can use both of these in your classroom on a limited basis without having to worry about cost)

So imagine this scenario - students are given a basic music composition project. Not only can they put the music snippet into their doc or slide, but they can type a text narrative about the composition process or other ideas AND they can perform the piece (singing or playing an instrument) by using the mote extension and put the audio file in the document with the text and music snippet. Wow! Talk about a powerful way for students to show what they know!

It is also good to know that the Music Snippet doesn’t collect, store, or process any personal information, so this product is FERPA and COPPA compliant. Also Mote is certified under COPPA and FERPA.

The Flat Music Snippet Add-On, coupled with the Mote extension, is a great way for students and teachers to bring the power of music to their google docs and slides projects!
