Day 1 – Choose eight of the following learning opportunities to do today!

Offline | Read for 30 minutes a selection of your choice. Be a reporter. Write a news article about the event that prevents you from being in school today. | Using the digits 1 to 9 at most one time each, fill in the blanks to make the following problem true. Sarah planted __ __ carrots in her garden. She planted them in __ rows. Each row had __ carrots. | Think of a time when you have seen animals moving together. Fish swim in schools. Birds fly in flocks. Sheep and other animals move in herds. Draw a model of fish, birds, or other animals moving together. Active/ Interactive | Create a collage using words and pictures showing your favorite things. Show someone the collage and explain why you chose the words and pictures. | Look through the kitchen and collect at least 5 items that are measured in mL (milliliters). Make a list of those items. Order them from lightest to heaviest. | Regrow a vegetable without soil! Many vegetables, like bok choy or green onion, can sprout if you put the root side in a cup of water. Try different veggies! Which vegetables or methods work best? How do they change over time? | “Super Sleuth” game time! Everyone chooses an object from around your house. In turn, they describe its color, shape, size, and texture. Everyone tries to guess what your object is. The first person to correctly guess what the object is becomes the “Super Sleuth!” |

Record your observations once in the morning, once in the afternoon, and once in the evening. What patterns do you notice each day and over different days? | Politics is the work or study of government. With permission, cut out pictures from newspapers or magazines that relate to politics. Offline | Read for 30 minutes a selection of your choice. Choose a book you have read or are reading. Create a poster trying to convince other students to read your book. In your advertisement, include the title, author, illustrator, and summary. Take a picture and email it to your teacher if you can. | Using the digits 1 to 9 exactly one time each, place a digit in each box to make the sum as close to 1000 as possible. | Explore magnets at home! Design an investigation to figure out how far a magnet can be to another magnet or a metal object before it starts or stops attracting. Describe your results. How did you figure out how magnets push or pull over a distance?. | The economy is the way a country manages its money and resources (such as workers and land) to produce, buy, and sell goods and services. With permission, cut out pictures from newspapers or magazines that relate to the economy. Be able to explain why you selected each picture. |

Active/ Interactive | Read a recipe (maybe ask someone in your house for their favorite recipe) and follow the directions to make it, if possible. If it is not possible to make the recipe, make a list of all the ingredients and materials you would need to make the recipe another time. | Measure the perimeter of one room in your home to the nearest foot. You can use a standard tool (ruler, tape measure, etc.) or a nonstandard tool (your foot, your body, etc.). I measured the _________ and the perimeter was_________. | Can you drop a penny into a cup without touching the penny or the cup? How can you use pushes and pulls to do this? | “Do I Look Like I am Made of Money?” game time! On pieces of paper cut into quarters, with each player getting four pieces of paper) everyone should write down one thing they need or want and what they could trade or barter to get it. Come up with three questions about how or why feral chickens are different than farm chickens | Choose one historical person you would like to know more about. Practice writing the verbs in your best cursive writing if you know how to write in cursive, otherwise, you can print. You can write each word twice. | Draw three rectangles with a perimeter of 20 units. | Natural disasters, like hurricanes, and people can cause damage to the environment. Brainstorm three ways that you could reduce the impact of different types of damage. Draw a model of your ideas. | Geography is the study of the earth’s surface and the different countries, people of the earth, its climate, its natural resources, its waters, and mountains. With permission, cut out pictures from newspapers or magazines that relate to geography and explain why you selected each picture. |
